I do hope though that if ID3 tag reading becomes supported there will be an option to keep working the way it does now for those of us that prefer it that way. The way Subsonic handles files is actually one of the main reasons I use it, but I can understand why others would prefer the ID3 route.

+1 for supporting collection lists build by id3 tags.

For example, having lists sorted by genre would make subsonic much more comfortable. Imaging you could listen to your Reggae collection by two clicks: picking Reggae and pressing "play random"

As this feature is not supported by Subsonic (yet?), something you can do is organize yoru music into folders.... Easier said then done, persoanlly, I have 70+ GB of music. But, I found the program of my dreams. In under 30 minutes, it too my 70+ GB of music and organized them in a customized file structures (artist/album). It does cost money sadly, but, it is TOTALLY worth it.

Is this feature being considered? Subsonic is already scanning tags, making the browsing pull from the tag database shouldn't take much more. Currently, it is listing all the songs in my root music folder which is the bulk of my collection; this must be taking a lot more resources than making an ajax-y type of collapsible browsing interface.

I don't think anyone is asking for the way Subsonic currently works to be changed. All I would want is an additional menu that would allow me to browse my collection either by genre or by year. This data is already in the database (you can see this by clicking 'Edit Tags' on any album) so it should be as simple as generating a couple navigational views. Sometimes I want to see everything marked as 'Jazz' and sometimes I want to see everything released in 2004 and sadly I have to go to an external player to do that right now.

I guess it would not be a big deal to add the search function for Meta tags like genre. technically the tags are already in the database and usable. I use for example the iPhnone app "Z-Subsonic". Within this app I can search for the Genre. so, why not implement this as well in the web frontend ?
My music collection has propper Genre tags. Searching against genre would improve subsonic really.
thanx anyway for this brilliant application.

any comments from the developer on this topic ?

cheers

I guess that's where they are happy. Using the ID3 for tag reading is actually easier to use than other instrument. May I know what is your chosen instrument too?

Searching or building playlists by genre is an absolute necessity. Not having this feature available is VERY frustrating. Why not have the option to use an iTunes database file like SlimSever / Squeezebox Server? If you don't use iTunes or ID3 Tags, don't check the box.

Disappointed to not see any major progress in this area in the latest release of the client. SubSonic better watch out or the newly announced Google media streaming services are going to over take you

I'm a new Subsonic user, and loving it, but I'd also love to see support for tags. I've gone to a lot of trouble to carefully tag my large flac collection, and it would definitely increase the usability of Subsonic for me.

Suggestion for other sortings?

Postby mr_stupid » Fri Jun 18, 2010 8:45 pm

Perhaps we could ask for an option that makes the left-hand-side list into a multi-level directory viewer. Let me explain a bit...

First, subsonic wants to use the directory structure. This is *exactly* why I switched over to subsonic. If you want something that uses the tag data for displaying the music list, try ampache.

But, subsonic really only wants a two/three level directory structure. Artist/Title or Artist/Album/Title. Where the first level (Artist) is shown down the left-hand-side, and the middle (browse) pane is used for Title or Album/Title.

If the left-hand-side could be setup to navigate two directory levels you could put Genre/Artist/Album/Title. Where the first pick on the left-hand-side would re-paint the left-hand-side with the subdirectory contents. There needs to be a limit to the number of subdirectories that this pane will descend before moving to the middle (browse) pane.

I'm not sure how to do this. Sometime you might want the left-hand-side pane to descend one directory, sometime two, and maybe more depending upon the contents of that directory. Perhaps the "flag" that says display the next subdirectory in the middle (browse) pane should be in the directory itself. Perhaps a dot file or something.

But, if we had something like that, each person could create a number of different directories sorted different ways. One should use symbolic links to minimise disk space usage.

Is this clear? or should I try to explain more clearly?

Thoughts?

Guys, just get your libraries in order. Get a proper tool (thousands out there) and restructure your folder hirarchy like /genre/artists/album

Then specify your music folder for every single genre and you are set!

I was irritated since i came from jinzora too, but it has a major advantage: SPEED! Guess how long it would take to build up a database with a huge library based on tags!

I'm sorry but I find the arguments that having the option to browse by tag would be resource-intensive to be completely baseless. The tags are *already* in the database. Indexes would just need to be added on fields like genre and year. This data would only be updated if the tags are edited and the data is only inserted when new song files are added.

All that I'm asking for is an additional navigation page (possibly within the "Welcome to Subsonic!" page) that allows users to list the genres, and then list albums by genre, or list years, and then albums by year. This would not be database/processor expensive despite what others seem to want to believe.

I have already donated as I really love this software and feel that it is overall the best solution at the moment but I would gladly donate 3x what I have already if this feature and some sort of shuffle (we'll save this discussion for another thread) were added.
