BUG?: Really LONG mp3 files - failing

Postby lpadron » Sun Jun 06, 2010 11:38 pm

SCENARIO:
Have several 40kbps MP3 files that are part of a AUDIO BOOK set. These files are 1 hour or more in duration. Size is usually around 18mb to 30mb. Compression is rarely above 64kb, usually 40kb.

PLATFORM:
Am using ANDROID Subsonic app. Files load and start playing without problem.

PROBLEM:
File stops playing above half though. Slide bar becomes unresponsive. Any attempt to "finger" slide bar fwd or rev results in RESTART of mp3 file from beginning.

My daughter has a load of audio books on my server, but they are chaptered. If I get time I will try to rip one as a single MP3 and see how long it plays (not sure how much of the Gruffalo I can listen to lol)

I will let you know.

Silly question but, have you tried playing the entire MP3 locally via Winamp or VLC or Media player to see if it has any corruption?

I wonder if because the file is so big, it fills the buffer allocated to the JW player, and breaks the playout?

Alan.

Lol,

Well, here I sit listening to The Little Mermaid, haha.

So the file is 135.2 Mb and was ripped at 320kb/s. I am transrating it on the fly to 64kb/s.

However, having re-read your email I see you are using an Android phone :(

Well, I will let it finish playing just out of curiosity. I will have an android phone (Sony Ericsson Xperia X10) so I will be able to try it out in time.

Just out of interest, are you streaming to the phone using the Mobile Network, or are you using your wireless router at home?

new Android app still hangs

Postby lpadron » Sat Jun 12, 2010 6:55 am

bump . . .

ANDROID APP PROBLEM . . .

Still have the STOPPING problem at MID POINT when trying to SLIDE the bar past the MID POINT of the LONG mp3 file.

Here's the exact sequence:

- load long mp3 file (134 mins)
- let Subsonic buffer up until the "CIRCLE" appears on the SLIDE BAR
- trying to move slide CIRCLE (button) past mid-point (65 mins) will cause FREEZE for about 10 secs, then return to start of MP3 file at ZERO point.
- track will play through to end (most of the time) if SLIDE is not used

I have a similar problem with my iPhone's "Z-Subsonic". It doesn't seem to handle long tracks well. Even when I'm on WiFi it never caches songs over say 8 minutes or so, which really sucks for me because I LOVE me some Opeth and Porcupine Tree (they often do long tracks) and my 3g coverage sucks, which brings me to my next problem.

I understand that AT&T 3g is shite in most places, but even with the highest compression setting and a fat upstream pipe my Z-subsonic will often stop in the middle of a song (probably due to poor reception) but never recover once I get good reception again. I have to completely restart the app sometimes or at least requeue the song and start again. Worse yet, sometimes when it stops in the middle of a song it thinks the song is "complete" and cache the incomplete song without trying to complete it. So I have to delete the damn cache just to get the complete song again (provided it's not too long of a song in the first place).

Very frustrating, especially after having spent $5 on the app and €10 on the subdomain for the server.

P.S. Why doesn't the iPhone app stream ahead as far as possible when on WiFi like the Android version does? I don't want to cache songs overnight playing REALTIME. I want to max out my WiFi connection to get it cached ASAP. Makes sense, right?
