Indexing function and Folder view. SOLVED

Postby fr3d » Thu Jun 10, 2010 11:53 pm

Hi all
I have managed, using soft-links or shortcuts to organize my folders so I can get the full index on the left but also links to open specific folders.
Now I need to somehow hijack the index process so it wont index things twice!

To explain more. If you have a folder structure like this on you hard disk:
Code: Select all
--Share
     --Music
          --artist1
          --artist2

And you set up "Music" in subsonic to be published then you see the list of artists on the left. Thats nice :-)
If you set up "Share" as the published folder then you see only "Music" on the left. However if you open the "Music" link you see all your music and artwork in one go in the center. Or at least everything in that folder. This is really nice.

I want both :-)

This can be useful if the library is divided into different sections on a folder level.
I have published the "Music" folder in subsonic and then also published another folder containing a soft-link (shortcut) to the "Music" folder. This way a link appears at the top of the list. The link is called "AA--Music". It comes at the top of the A list as I cant get anything to go above that yet.

However as you might Imagen everything gets indexed twice.
Perhaps there is a way to move the Indexing service and use a script that turns off the link or deletes it before calling the real Indexing service. Of course this script would re-enable the link after the indexing.
So where is the indexing script/service/tool, and can this all be achieved. ?

Thanks.

Ok..
I have figured out how to use the Shortcuts in the general setting area.
But I still need a way to not scan or index a folder. Otherwise I cant list the contents of several folders on the left and have shortcuts to one or two of them at the top. Well I can, but its messy, involves soft-links and results in the library having two listings for the same music. The file count doubles :-/ .. Not what I really want.

Anyone any ideas!?

would hiding the folders work?

Subsonic might search specified folders like \music\rock even if hidden if you specify that as a folder. But if you then use just \music subsonic might not see the hidden folders?

Just an idea.

Perfect. Thanks.
I never thought of something so simple.. I was thinking that as the Subsonic service seems to be running as root, that hiding things wont work..

So now I have my music listed in full on the left and I have a lits of shortcuts to certain folder sections. ie "Complete-Albums" and "Compilations+The-Rest"

For those interested it looks like this.
I'm using Linux so I dont know how it will work on Windows or Mac.
I set up three folders in the Music folder section in Subsonic.

Code: Select all
--Music
   --Complete-Albums
      --~~lots of music
   --Compilations+The-Rest
      --~~lots of music
   --Links
      --.Complete-Albums
      --.Compilations+The-Rest

The Links folder contains shortcuts to the other two folders though I have renamed the shortcuts to include a "." at the beginning so they are hidden.
Now the indexing doesn't find the shortcuts and index the files twice :-)

Next I set up the shortcuts in the General section in Subsonic.
.Complete-Albums .Compilations+The-Rest
Note: If you have spaces in the file name you have to put " " (quotes) around the name.

Seems to be working so far. :-)
