Howdy folks

WHS will not allow the EXE to run, therefore I cannot install SubSonic on that machine (where all my music lives).

WHS is designed instead to run "ADD-INs" that are installed via MSI installs.

I do not know if /any/ MSI install routine will work or if it needs to be WHS compliant in some way... Ideally, any program (SubSonic, for today's purposes) should by made into an MSI install which WHS would treat as an add-in.

Alternatively, I tried installing SubSonic on another PC on the network but cannot get the program to "find" the music files. (No music folder found. Please change the settings.)

I found other threads on this error and tried the following to "find" the music but, so far no good!

The path does not find music folders, neither as a mapped drive nor as a UNC path.

I tried setting the service to "run as" a legitimate user on the WHS box... No good.

What am I missing?

Naturally either way (as an add-in to WHS or on another PC that points to the WHS box) is going to work...

Hi,

Running it on WHS is no problem. Just RDP (Remote Desktop) into it instead of using the console.

I just tried installing SubSonic remotely - accessing the WHS from my workstation via RAdmin - and I get exactly the same error this way as I did if standing at the WHS keyboard. I am at my PC, controlling the WHS by RAdmin, running the WIN EXE installer from the local share. No good.

Make sure you are logged in as Administrator on your WHS. I certainly had no problem running exe files on my WHS desktop once remotely accessing the full OS. Used the inherent Windows Remote Desktop Connection tool from my XP box, rather than other software, but Radmin should work fine I guess.

Could there be local policies in place, or even firewalls, refusing even the Administrator running exe files?

Yea, Administrator... (WHS will not allow ANY additional users to be setup except from inside the Console.) It does seem very much like a policies issue. (Not a firewall as this doesn't work even when at the box directly.)

The real, best answer would be a SubSonic built to properly (per WHS white paper) install on a WHS box, which means it must be an ADD-IN with an MSI install package.

I may go back to FirePlay, which does install properly. I do not like it nearly as much as SubSonic (by a long shot) but I don't need to fudge anything to make it work!

Yes, interesting that is! SOME install EXEs do run, others won't!
As it /is/ a server and I am not really installing much on it, so I don't have a wide sample set to use for understanding, but it really does not seem to make sense! I looked in the log for anything but there's nothing there.

I have had subsonic running on a homebuilt WHS box for 8 months now and I love it. I found the best way to install any program is to remote in and move the exe from a shared folder to the desktop. You may also have to right click on the exe and uncheck the "blocked" status of the program for it to execute. After that easy install.

If the setup file was copied from another pc you will have to right click on it and go to properties. In the lower left you will see unblock. Unblock it and you will be able to run the install.

I know this thread is a little old, but I wanted to add my own experience. I installed the latest 4.0.1 build of Subsonic on Windows Home Sever Vail beta. I used Remote Desktop to connect to the server using an account with admin rights. I then copied the subsonic-4.0.1-setup.exe installer from a thumb drive and ran the installer from the desktop of the server. It installed Java for me and then ran the Subsonic install without any complications. I'm sure if the file were copied from the computer I used to remote from instead of off the thumb drive it would have worked the same way.

I wasn't required to changed anything with the file permissions as some mentioned with an install on Windows Home Server v1. It's possible when WHS v2 (Vail) is finally released, this may change.

I know this is an old topic, but I came looking for an answer before I found the solution for my installation:

It appears that Subsonic needs "write access" to the folders, which is unfortunate.
