Subsonic & jlGui

Back again Sindre...
hows it going..

Still playing around with this
I thinks it's way cool..
I placed a link to my Subsonic
version on my home page last
night...it's officially on line now
:)

Ok.. so I'm looking for info
on using alternative players
and I read somewhere in here
that it may be possible to embed
a player into Subsonic (somehow)

Taking that a step further..while staying
within the realm of Java..
JNLP configurator service

I wondered if you would take a good look at this,
you may have seen this before even..

When you get a chance to check this out
could you kindly let me know if I could use this as a
player option somehow ?
(ie:by adding a link to the jnlp_configurator..)

I think having a player option in pure Java can only
compliment Subsonic..
and this one is essentially a Winamp clone..
it has all of the features one would find using a
Winamp stand alone player..

Let me know when ya can ok?

Thanks dude..
Talk soon..
Rod

Nice! Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely take a closer look at the new Java Web Start-based players.

I've experimented with JavaZoom some time ago, but I gave it up due to some performance problems. But it's a long time ago, and things might have changed.

Cool.. 8)
no problem

Glad I brought it back to
your attention again..
I was a beta tester for
the jlGui players vers. 2 & 3
and they have indeed made
major improvements on it.
The 3.0 vers. really is a
clone of Winamp..
it seems to be able to do
all that the stand alone player
can do.

Yeah that would be cool
if you could find a way
to incorporate jlGui into
Subsonic...
is there a way to test a stream
URL now with it?
for example..
what would be the stream URL for
a playlist I create using Subsonic?
I should be able to punch it into
the jnlp_configurator and have it
work yes?

Quick Update on my last post Sindre..

I figured out how to get the stream / playlist
URL thru Winamp..
(I shoulda known before..
entered that into the jlGui configurator but
no success.. probably because of the suffix
extension perhaps..

I'll continue to research for a working
solution..if one exists..

Had a chance to look at this any further
yet Sindre?

I would like to have an option to use a
embedded player as well..if it's possible
can you guide me in that area..?
(like how to incorporate the exact stream URL
into a embedded player code...would be helpful)

Hi again,

Yes, I've had a look and I think I understand what the problem is. When jlGui is started, it connects not once but several times to the Subsonic URL. On my machine it connects five-six times within one millisecond. I have no idea why jlGui does this.

Furthermore, Subsonic has a feature which allows at most one connection to a remote player (this was implemented to overcome a bug in Windows Media Player), so it terminates extra connections. Without going into more details, this is what causes the problem. When I temporarily removed the aforementioned feature, jlGui played along nicely.

Sindre

Well thats encouraging news...
so you think jlGui has the potential
to be incorporated into Subsonic ?
(or at least a possible player option)

Also..

I'm interested in testing a couple of
embedded players with my installation..
just to see the results.
Could you post a "accurate" example of
the stream URL I should be using..?

The URL I believe is the correct one to test with:
http://MY-HOST-HERE:8080/subsonic/strea ... uffix=.mp3

would this be right?

Thanks Sindre,
Rod

Yes, it has the potential. However, I'm not sure if there are any significant benefits by using the Java Webstart-based jlGui instead of the native player (WMP, winamp etc).

An embedded player, on the other hand, might give some benefits. I've looked at that (briefly) in the past, including some Flash-based players and jlGui applet, but I didn't find them good enough (in terms of performance, functionality and stability) to pursue the matter further.

Just for fun I tried the jlGui applet again right now, and it keeps skipping prematurely to the next track.

It's great if you want to play around with embedded players, maybe you'll find something usable. The URL you mention is indeed the correct one.

Sindre
