Ubuntu/Fios

Postby g29115 » Fri Aug 20, 2010 9:50 pm

Just wondering if there is anyone who has their set up working that is using fios and ubuntu. Would like to know how you set up the port forwarding on the fios router. Thanks! (and no, subsonic is not able to set it automatically for some reason)

It is probably failing because your router does not have uPnP port forwarding (automatic port forwarding) enabled or it doesn't support it.

Fios is NOT your router. Fios is a service provided by Verizon in the U.S.

The user manuals for the routers that have been provided by that service can be found at

http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSInternet/Networking/Setup/QuestionsOne/99181.htm

Read the manual for your router to learn how to setup port forwarding.

If you're still confused please read

The fact you're using Ubuntu (you don't state the version) should make no difference whatsoever.http://portforward.com/guides.htm

Also note fios blocks port 80 or at least they did when I had it. So make sure your external port is not 80

Uhm...

Thanks <grits teeth> for the replies. First, I am not a total noob. I do know that Fios is a service and not a router, however most fios service uses the same router model(s) to connect the fios internet service to your home, once inside. That would be the Actiontec M1424-WR-Rev.D (in my case). For what its worth, its 10.04 of Ubuntu. Not using port 80.

The point of my question, still, was to see if anyone using Fios, and hence, my router, had luck setting up the port forwarding with subsonic. The reason for mentioning Ubuntu is in case anyone else is having a problem... and that it might be related to the ubuntu client. Both questions are a bit of collective brainstorming as I try to figure out what is going on.

Thanks for any additional thoughts.

I'm having a bit of trouble too. It's not the router - I'm able to get subsonic working and streaming on Windows. Not sure if maybe we need port forwarding rules for localhost and the "server" local IP address, and do we need to set rules in iptables? Has anyone got this working with MI424WR router and Ubuntu/Linux?

I am running fine off Ubuntu 10.04 through the Fios provided router. The only issue I have encountered is glitchiness in updating my dyndys account using ddclient. No issues with port forwarding on the router -- I set up manually as a rule for my server with local address 192.168.1.X, custom ports, protocol both, source ports any, destination port 4040, forward to port 4040. When done, applied rules should have a row that looks like this:

[pc name]
192.168.1.[X]:4040
Application
TCP Any -> 4040
UDP Any -> 4040 All Broadband Devices Active

Where are you trying to access your server from? Have you confirmed that port 4040 isn't blocked? If you are tying to connect from a workplace that blocks everything but standard http / https port, you may need to explore tunnelling your Subsonic connection through an ssh connection.

I'm connecting from my Android phone - everything works well under Windows and using port 80, it's just under Linux where I can't seem to get port 4040 open, despite setting up the rules on my router. When I try to have subsonic do it automatically, it claims it sets port forwarding up successfully, but claims it can't reach my subsonic.org personal address, and something like yougetsignal claims the port is closed on my external IP.

I'll try and work at this more tonight.
