I am using a special version of XLD command line as my transcoding program. I asked the developer to create a command line version that output to the stdout of the system. He did so and it works very well, indeed. It can handle Apple Lossless up to 24bits at 192KHz. If you email XLD they could probably make this available for you.

ALAC on Ubuntu

Postby antagonist » Tue Aug 10, 2010 5:56 am

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, Subsonic 4.0.1 (build 1524). I'm not able to get any of my ALAC files to play.

Are there any specific instructions for Linux as different from OS X? ffmpeg isn't transcoding properly.

I tried the ALAC binary as suggested, but it failed (as it's OS X compiled, I gather).

Can anyone help?

antagonist, I just installed Subsonic 4.0.1 into Ubuntu 10.04 (32bit) into a VMWare Fusion vm on my MacBook Pro.
The FFMPEG in 10.04 does decode ALAC files, but the m4a to mp3 transcode in Subsonic was not enabled.
Under Settings->Transcode, check the enable box for m4a > mp3. I found the default box checked, but not the enable box.

Then, under Settings->Player, select the player you are using and make sure the m4a > mp3 is checked under Active Transcoding. It wasn't after I did the above.

After doing these two things, I was able to play ALAC encoded (encoded in iTunes) via the web player with no other changes.

This seems like the best thread to post about ALAC issues in.

I can't seem to get ALAC files to work with Subsonic, either. I downloaded FFMPEG and FLAC from the links in this thread:
http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtop ... 09&start=0

Is this dated? Or is this version one of the LAME versions that can supposedly transcode ALAC? I'm pretty lost in all this after reading many threads on the subject. I'm not sure if Subsonic is even trying to transcode my ALAC files or not. On Subsonic's Status page, if I try to stream to my phone, it shows the current file as ".../xxxxx.m4a" and Transmitted as" 0 B". Thanks for any help you can provide.

EDIT: I see in the Log now that it did start the transcoder, so at least I know it is trying now.
