subsonic not recognizing tags

Postby sn0skier » Thu Sep 30, 2010 8:19 pm

What determines the order that songs are presented in the Android subsonic application? I have all of my songs on my computer as 01, 02, etc... through 10 and yet the songs appear in subsonic as 1,11,12,13,14,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 if an album has 14 songs. Anyone know why?

Edit:
So I figured out that this is happening because subsonic is not recognizing tags on some songs. Look at about post 10 to get the full scoop.

I actually noticed that it isn't in one particular order. Different albums are in different orders. Some of them are right some aren't. All of my songs are named and tagged the same way. What is going on?

Just realized this is because a good portion of my tags are not being recognized by subsonic. Any idea why this is?

Define 'good portion'? I believe Subsonic uses JAudioTagger.

Are you having the same ordering issue within Subsonic?

I would say that about 50% of albums have at least one song that isn't tagged. Probably about 5%-10% of all songs aren't tagged. I use MediaMonkey to organize and play my music. I haven't had any other problems with any other program recognizing the tags. iTunes, Windows, J River Media Center, stock Android Media Player, and any other program I have come across recognize the tags. Maybe something happenned when Subsonic was building its database? Does Subsonic even build a database, or does it read every song every time you open a folder? If it does build a database, is there any way to reload it without reinstalling?

Mediamonkey is THE go-to tool for fixing tags...use the Help section to learn how to use it, connect to Amazon, and get your tags/cover art fixed up in short order. I have no out-of-sync album playback after fixing my tags.

To clarify:
I use mediamonkey to order/play all my music and my music collection is more compulsively organized than anyone I have met online or in IRL. I have double checked to make sure info in the library matches the tags of my songs.
Every other program I use recognizes the tags.
I have very large album covers on some of my music (1000x1000 pixels +) and this might be affecting how tags are read? However, all songs on an album have the same album art and yet some tags are being read correctly and some aren't.

Any other ideas what might be going on? I also have a huge collection. About 20,000. Does anyone know if a large collection negatively affects subsonic?

So, I discovered some new things. Every song for which the tags are not loading have a .lrc (synced lyrics by minilyrics) file associated with them. I also noticed that a minority of tracks with a .lrc file still worked anyway. Finally I noticed that my most recent tracks in my library all work even if they had a .lrc file.
I tried a few things. First I tried deleting the .lrc file, which didn't work. Then I tried overwriting the .lrc file from within minilyrics, which actually made the info appear in Subsonic!!! Upon closer inspection I finally realized that it actually had nothing to do with the .lrc file exactly, but rather "ID3v2 synchronized lyrics."
I remembered that I had updated minilyrics recently for the first time in a while and thought this might be why the behavior was no longer happening. So I went to the minilyrics changelog http://www.crintsoft.com/mlwhatsnew.htm and looked to see what might have changed in version 6 or 7 that might have affected this behaviour. Turns out in a (fairly) recent version there was this entry:
Fixed: Bug of saving ID3v2 synchronized lyrics (Compatibility with Windows Media Player)
So, I am pretty sure now that this is the cause.

I don't really want to go through my whole collection and delete all of the ID3v2 synchronized lyrics. That is unless someone knows of a program that could do this all at once. MediaMonkey is not capable of it. I haven't tried Windows Media Player, but this might be a good option since it seems to be the only program that uses ID3v2 synchronized lyrics. Does anyone know if you can delete all ID3v2 synchronized lyrics at once from within Windows Media Player? Does anyone use Windows Media Player on this forum? Does anyone use Windows Media Player period?

Regardless, Subsonic not recognizing tags because of the ID3v2 synchronized lyrics bug is a problem with subsonic. No other programs have the same problem, and it should be an easy fix.

TL;DR
ID3v2 synchronized lyrics bug is causing tags to not be read in Subsonic.
Need help from a Windows Media Player user.

You might want to try something like this with a small sample of your mp3 files to see what happens.

Doesn't work. When I restore it restores the faulty ID3v2 synchronized lyrics

No one uses Windows Media Player, or has Windows Media Player, and could tell me if editing multiple ID3v2 synchronized lyrics is possible?

So I checked myself, and there don't seem to be any good programs to delete the synchronized lyrics on multiple files. The only one i found was called all frames, but it costs $10 to do multiple files, soooo no dice. Guess i'll have to do each song individually unless anyone has a better idea.

Just in case anyone is following this thread I got a response to an e-mail that I sent to minilyrics that says this:
"In the next release, there's a lyrics tool could do this. So, please wait for a few weeks."
So minilyrics should be able to fix this soon.
