Compare to Subsonic to Audiogalaxy?

Postby cgwaters » Sun Sep 26, 2010 6:53 pm

I downloaded and installed the Audiogalaxy beta last week and have been using it with Windows 7 and my Android device.

Lifehacker listed Subsonic as one of their recommended best Android applications. The mention of it brought me here.

Anyone know how Subsonic and Audiogalaxy compare? I've learned here that Subsonic runs as a service (on Windows, anyway); whereas Audiogalaxy runs as an application (an icon for which appears in the system tray). I'm sure the Android client is much different.

Are there any other noteworthy differences? Any reason to use one over the other?

AG is a pure streamer, no caching/saving to phone, unless something's changed since I used it last.

As mentioned above, Audio Galaxy has no caching, this can make a big difference. If you lose signal at all, your music will cut out. This happens to me on my daily commute in a few areas, so AG would stutter, but subsonic caches ahead for X number of songs so it's entirely seamless. Both have their bugs, though. Subsonic has some issues right now with media button controls (I don't use this currently, so I can't personally attest to it) and it has a bug where it'll repeat the first item in a playlist, both will be fixed in future updates, I'm sure.

In terms of AG bugs, I've seen random MP3's that it just won't play no matter what, and it gives no explanation of what went wrong.

Bottom line, AG is quite a bit simpler, but definitely less powerful and transparent. Subsonic takes more work to setup (not much, but more), and has a lot more options / can be customized.

Thanks. Any pros/cons of using a service (Subsonic) compared to an application (AG)? An application seems less obtrusive to me.

Also, how does the Subsonic client (for Android) compare to AG? The AG client has some powerful features but seems to be lacking some obvious features, too.

Actually, the service would probably be a lot less obtrusive. It runs in the background and you only see a tray icon.
