Plugplayer on iPad or any device authentication question

Postby sanjonny » Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:52 am

First of all, yes, I know there is a couple of iPad/iPhone apps, that is not my question so please do not reply just use the app, that does not help.

Okay subsonic up and running and works fine with mobile connections and all that. Now I am trying to get plug player to work, because I can do some cool stuff with the iPad if I can figure this out and will post that once I get it working.

But I get errors and I can only guess the are authentication errors, where to two are not playing nice. The iPad will play the music streams thru both the browser and the other apps but I get an 801 error when plug player tries to open the streams, using the external player with playlist. I have asked questions at plug player and they think I need to supply the username and password to subsonic, but I have no idea how to do that. I read a little about ldap, but don't think that is it, maybe it is but thought someone who understands subsonic would understand better. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Well it seems these forums are not very quick about answering questions. For anyone with an ipad and iphone that wants to use plugplayer instead of the other apps in the app store that are built for subsonic, I was able to solve the authentication problem see below:

For those who might run into this in the future it was actually an easy fix. I went to the server computer and there was a popup box on the taskbar that said that an unknown device wanted to share media and was that allowed. I clicked yes and everything worked fine, including browsing full playlists. It appears that windows authenticates the plugplayer and then everything works for subsonic/plugplayer interface. This was using the latest version of plugplayer, the latest stable subsonic and windows media player which passes the authentication along for the local network to plugplayer on an xp machine.

this is probably a stupid question, but what did you use as "device url" on the ipad iphone app?

I have no issues getting to my subsonic page on a computer via "localhost:port no" but keep can't seem to connect via the PP app.

Thanks in advance!

For my local network, instead of local host, I use the actual ip address of the computer. So for example on my home network the general address range is 192.168.0.XXX, the address of the server is 192.168.0.16 and the subsonic port number is 6500 so the address locally is http://192.168.0.16:6500.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

my setup is that my music server is on 192.168.2.101:6500

if i go to "http://192.168.2.101:6500" in any web browser on my network i get to the proper subsonic login page.

If i put that same address into the plugplayer app i get "error - could not load the xml description file at the specified URL".

I'm not sure what else i could be doing wrong.

In the subsonic server settings page I check "Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (UPnP port forwarding)" and configured my router to allow this port to be forwarded too.

Is there anything else i might be missing?

If i go to the server, i don't see the taskbar notification of a machine attempting to connect to an unknown device for media sharing. Was this a windows notification?
