Play All, and I mean ALL, music?

Postby fermunky » Wed Jul 07, 2010 1:20 pm

So, since installing this great music server, I've spent countless hours re-organizing my music folder so that I have the folder structure of Artist/Album/tracks. And I've started using subsonic almost exclusively. One thing I cannot seem to find is a Play All function on the entire music index. If this doesn't exist, can it be added? The closest I can find it to open a folder, and then click the Play All button.

I think thats a good idea, but i see one problem with it.
It depends on the size of your music collection but have you ever hit playall with a lot of music ?
It will take a long time to gen the playlist.
I have:
8,584 artists
3,121 albums
46,770 songs
262.60 GB (~ 4,079 hours)
at the time of this post..
For subsonic to creat a playlist with all that music in it i think would take a hell of a lot of time..

My collection is very small, less than 2400 songs, or less than 10gig. But even still, a bloated app like MS Media Player seems to load it perfectly fine. If it is building it from an indexed list, I don't see why it would take so long...

I understand, but still, it shouldn't be much for a web browser to turn up a 10,000, or even 50,000 line page of text... Hell, with your music collection, I bet your folder list is longer than my actual music list would be, and should still load without issue.

All this aside, let say it DOES take a while, then OK, have a pop-up on that link that says "Are you sure, this could take a dick long year"... or similar of course...

What if it was something that just did a constant random play, I think that would suffice more.

This would work much better, I have done a play all on a top 1000 song collection and it hangs the browser while it's populating the list, so my "play ALL" would consist of playing over 20,000 songs. I think the browser times out before the list comes back for playing which is probably why Sindre made the play random function only go up to 50

This would be a very useful feature!

Hope it will be included in release 4.2?

It is a bit of irony that the Android app lets you do just that! Select the server you want to connect to, then select shuffle play and it just starts playing from the entire server library.

I agree that this would be a nice feature for the desktop as well. even if you could select shuffle the albums displayed on the home screen random presentation would be helpful. Sometimes, I just want to hear some music and I'm not in the mood to give it too much thought.

Also, the player controls on the Android app are very easy to use, I'd likewise prefer seeing something similar on the desktop.

the android app doesnt do that it lets you generate a random listing of cds and then you pick one cd to play.... I have been wanting a play all for artsits for a while now.... when i used to use my ipod i could go to an artist and do play all and it would play all their albums and i could make it random so i could play all songs from an artist randomly

I'm not sure what you're saying the android app doesn't do.

I frequently just connect to one of the 3 servers available and just tap shuffle play on the home screen to get random play from the whole library on the selected server.

Beyond that, if you mean generating a shuffle from a selected play list or other selection parameter, I too have not seen any way to do that.
