Help: Network Issues (setting things up for the first time)

Postby blueturtles » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:19 pm

Hello,

Please be patient with me...I am brand new to all this and I am struggling to make it all work. But I *SO* want it to work, therefore I am hoping someone will be willing to guide me through the trouble zones. :)

Here is a little background of what is going on and how I have set things up. First, I am using Windows Home Server (Acer easyStore H340) and have followed the directions from this "How to" http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4247.

Now if I log in to the server using Remote Desktop Connection and open a browser, directed to: http://localhost:8080/subsonic/index.view, things seem to work (I think, the reason I say that, is because the songs load in the flash player, but I can't hear anything and I assume that is because it is on the server and the Remote Desktop Connection). The only thing that has me troubled with it is that I don't see the song's time counting down or any indication that the song is actually playing. Any thoughts?

The next problem I have is that I can't get Subsonic to open up and work in any of the browsers. When I type in the xxxx.subsonic.org address, I
get the "Could not connect to remote server" with the following address displayed: http://192.168.11.3:85/music. This is my network troubles...help?

Under the Subsonic 'Networking' option, it says that I have "Successfully forwarding port 8080." But under the Subsonic address option, I get "Status: xxxx.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (ConnectTimeoutException).

I am doing something wrong, I know, but I just don't know where to begin now. Any guidance would be fantastic.

It seems that I know just enough about all of this to be dangerous. I understand port-forwarding, etc., but not enough to figure it out on my own. Anyone willing to help a rookie out and expand my brain in the process. :)

Cheers, Jon

The port numbers don't match. You list localhost 8080, then it shows that Subsonic.org is looking for 85.

Try http://Servername:Port# to test Subsonic internally.

Gary,

Thanks for the tip. I guess my question is, how do you change the port so Subsonic recognizes it? Do I use the 8080 or 85...I suspect the 8080. If so, do I use the Subsonic control panel and change it? When I go to the panel, it says 8080 is "Address already in use. Please change port number." I guess I am stumped on where and how to change it? Sorry for so many questions!

Cheers, Jon

Well, ... if subsonic is forwarding to 85, then I would suggest setting your subsonic server to 85 and then setup port forwarding in your router to forwar 85 to your server.

Gary,

I have finally figured things out...I followed the suggestions in another thread: http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3931.

Thanks you for the tips!

Cheers, Jon
