I just tested, and it works just fine, but after removing the :8080 port. :)

You mean http://bencjedi.subsonic.org took you to my Subsonic server front page?

That's odd because I am not port-forwarding 80 to anything:

C:\Documents and Settings\benc>telnet localhost 80
Connecting To localhost...Could not open connection to the host, on port 80: Connect failed

Whereas 8080, I am

Yep. I simply removed your port number, and got to login.

edit: shows 8080 as your port

Thanks.. Internal LAN confusion. I didn't realize my iPhone was on wifi and not 3G. It all makes sense now. Thanks for checking from outside for me. :)

If I can figure out how to make my DIR-655 setup an A record to go outside (to get back in) it will probably work by the name.

Oddly enough.. in the Safari web browser when I put in bencjedi.subsonic.org:8080 the IP is transcribed into 76.177.107.3 in the browser address bar, but when I try to add the name as bencjedi.subsonic.org:8080 in the iSub app I get an error. I'll let Ben Baron know and see if anyone else in the iSub testers group has the same name resolution problem (I took my iPhone out of wifi mode and got the same result as with wifi on)

One of the reasons I don't run dhcp, and have manually-assigned IP's throughout. I used one server on the Android app for 'Home'...set up with my static Subsonic machine's IP, and another for 'Away' with my subsonic.org address. Simply select which server accord. to my location. :)

Correction, in Safari I was putting in the name without the port 8080 part and it was resolving. Turns out that's how I need to put it into iSub too. LOL

I don't recall changing anything that would make bencjedi.subsonic.org autoresolve the 8080 port, but that's what it appears as happening now.

I can be on either wifi or 3G and use the name now with iSub. I'm not clear on how I don't need to specify 8080 because that is what my Subsonic server is set to run as (and subsequently what port I am forwarding in the DIR-655 config.. they call it 'virtual server').

I wonder if this autoresolving the port from simply the name was a Subsonic change on a previous upgrade. I should pay better attention to these things. :)

Although my understanding of it is limited, I think that in itself is the purpose of dynamic dns resolution...the client(subsonic) 'prompts' the host (subsonic.org) any time a change is made, or the client starts, computer boots, etc. This would obviate the need for a user to manually update the dynamic dns host. :)

but when i comes to the http://xxxx.subsonic.org, it's no contact. Again, Firefox cannot establish a connection to the server at 127.0.0.1:4040,
same goes for my phone.. :? Any suggestions.. !!

Daniell,

Try this, type 'hostname' from a command prompt (or terminal window) on the computer where the subsonic server is running. This will show you the computers name. Now type 'ping <hostname>' substituting your actual hostname. If the response comes from 127.0.0.1 then you should modify your host file. You can create (or modify) an entry for your hostname that maps to the actual IP address. For example my hostname is "subsonic" and its IP address is 10.1.1.200. This is what I have in my hostfile

Code: Select all
127.0.0.1 localhost
10.1.1.200 subsonic.local subsonic

The hostfile is found in /etc/hosts on linux and in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on windows.

Let us know if this helps.

So I just tried this and when I ping my hostname it comes back as fe80::1562:28fb:7e43:6c7e%11. I thought this was a hex conversion from decimal but when I tried to convert on a site it gave me: 65152...

I'm stuck....
