use 2 pcs as servers?

Postby importune » Wed Nov 17, 2010 10:03 pm

Me and my wife both have android devices and we each have our music libraries- because we work in the same office, we listen to music together while we're at home, but when we're out (say at the gym), we'd like to stream our music to our devices. I would really like to stream both of our servers into one setup....so that it all shows up together. Is this possible?

I'd like it a bit more if it all showed up together in the browser as well, that'd be shweet. I'd be willing to leave a donation of the hefty sort. ;)

First:
Could setup of a single Subsonic server with a folder sturcture such as this work for you:

Settings >> Music Files

Music
/var/music

Incoming(unsorted and new)
/var/music/Incoming

person1
/var/person1

person2
/var/person2

Take a look at this too http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4396&highlight=

Second:
If First option not a choice,
What is your setup exactly?
Where are the computers in relation to each other?
How many routers/proxies involved?

computer1
operating system=
has subsonic server version installed=
has file sharing enabled by what method=

computer2
operating system=
has subsonic server version installed=
has file sharing enabled by what method=

Then we can take a shot at seeing what's possible.

There are a few options, probably none of which are a bullseye, but just may be close enough.

Assuming you have 2 servers: His and Hers, I would copy all the music from Hers into a seperate subdirectory on His. ( Let's say C:\Subsonic\Hers)

So now all you've done is make her music available on your server in it's own subdirectory. (You can also do the same copying yours to hers, which isn't a bad backup idea at all!)

When you go to work, just go into the Settings menu, Music folders and uncheck the enabled block for hers. Then when you pull up the server on the Andriod device you'll only see your music. When you want to listen to the combined collection, jusy reenable the directory with her music. Then use the pick list to select "All Folders".

The best part about it is you can probably just change the settings from any computer at work if you forgot to set it the way you want before leaving!

I've even chenged settings through the browser on my phone.

I'm on a Windows server, so implementation may be a bit different on other platforms, but the idea should work.

The other approach would be to set up a folder in the main music subdirectory, put all her music there, and then make the folder (Her Music or perhaps a bit more elegant name) defined as a Shortcut. Folders defined as Shortcuts move to the top of the left column and do show up in the top of the listing in the Android player.

Either way should give you a workable solution, let me know if you need further help.

I will make the assumption you are behind a firewall at home.
Do NOT do this setup if you are not behind a firewall!

I will also assume your not using any type of windows based domain.
If that is the case this is simple to setup.

Create a new user on each local PC and call it what ever you like but in this example call the user "subsonic" Give it a decent password and make it a local admin just in case. It will probably work OK as a reg user but for this setup make it a admin. You can always reduce it back once you get it working.

Then on each PC create windows shares to each music library you want to have in your collection and allow this subsonic user FULL access to the share. For example: HerTunes, HisTunes

Now on the computers your running subsonic change the service to login as this subsonic user. The trick here is the service will use this ID to reach out on the network. Be sure to restart the service after making the change.

Now jump in subsonic and update the "Music Folders" location to point to these new shares. On your PC setup the link like so: \\hercomputer\HerTunes

Since you have files local you can retain the the local drive definitions but using the UNC name here you can scan and index those files on that remote share.

Force a index update and watch the log. You will see subsonic reach out and index those remote files. :)

I have a PC setup in my living room that uses this method to connect back to my main server PC that I stream to the Internet with. I currently index 186 gig this way and it works well.

Just for the menu and shortcuts?

One server but differet users?

I have some of the same "problems", but I see it in another way: I would like to have all of our families music in one place. But I have some favorites, and so do my wife and my children too .
If we sorted our music into folders: One for each person - then I could give different users access to different folders. Say I log in as "dad" i get "dads" folder, "moms" folder and my chlidrens folder. If i log in as "jazzlover" i only get "dads" folder. Children logging in as "children" they get ony "Childres" folder, and so on - Wouldn't that be nice?

Then I also could give my friends access to only a part of my selection.

Then both mine and yours problems would be gone, with only one server.

Maybe we could make this a suggestion for a new feature?

I did try that earlier, but did not get any response. See:

The original poster's problem now has a better solution as the 2.1 version of the Android client now accomodates viewing/selecting individual folders. So it is now possible to create several folders that can be accessed individually on the Android client.

The second problem has yet to be addressed. That is, how to restrict/allow access to users on individual folders. For now the only way to segregate user access to folder is to use multiple servers/websites.

If the music folders were listed in the settings/Users tab with check boxes to indicate whcih folder that user has access to, then it should solve everybodys problems.
