Help with local network access

Postby mech259 » Wed Dec 08, 2010 12:44 pm

I installed Subsonic on my Windows 7 machine and everything has worked fine for a couple of weeks. Yesterday, I couldn't access my login page though a web browser on any of my machines other than the server. I kept getting time out errors. It worked fine doing that until yesterday. The IP address listed was a local IP according to an IP search, but not the IP of my network or from my ISP. Any ideas? I can access the login from outside my local network.

Are you a donating member (using the subsonic.org address)? Can you access SS via the local host IP and port (eg.192.168.1.3:4040)? Does SS list any errors in the log?

Any chance you're using IE9? I recently lost the ability to connect over internet to any SS site in IE9. I can still connect to my internal sites if I use their local IP:port# addresses. I'm not sure if I changed a setting or MS did another infamous stealth "upgrade" that caused the problem. Yesterday was update Tuesday!

Chrome works fine on the same system.

Yes I am a donating member. I can access it from outside my LAN on any web browser as stated. I can only access it internal on my LAN with the server the music is on via a browser. Have 4 different machines and other than my server, the others are 3 Linux machines with Firefox and 1 XP Home machine with Firefox. Where is the log?

Are you specifying the port number for the server in the local address? When you access through Subsonic, it appends the correct port number for you. When you access from inside your own network you need to use the local address plus the correct port number.

e.g. http://192.168.1.254:8080

Not accessing it that way. I just type http://(my name).subsonic.org and the login screen is supposed to come up. It did that for a couple of weeks and for some reason, it stopped working.

That's what happened to me in IE9. Have you tried it in Chrome? For some reason it's OK in Chrome but not IE9. I haven't figured out the cause yet. We may both have the same issue. I also can't access any other SS sites with IE9, but they all work in Chrome.

Have you tried accessing other sites, such as the demo site, have you tried any other browsers?

Update: I uninstalled IE9 and reverted back to IE8. Everything runs fine now.

mech259: You most likely have issues with port alignment and updating SS.org server with the proper port update.

First verify what port number SS is using by opening the SS control panel. I just updated to 4.2 last night and found that it reset my port assignment to 80. I had to input the original port number I was using and everything then worked fine.

If your port number looks good, try changing it to anything else then changing it back to what you were using as this should force SS to report the change back up to the SS.org server.

Also test using your external IP:portnumber. This is all that ss.org does, it just translates the servername.subsonic.org into your external ip:portnumber fror connection to your server.

I reset Port assignment to 80 mapped to machine with music, still no work from any other machines on network, just the server that has the music on it. I can type the address in the browser on the server and can access it, typ on any other machine on LAN and it will not load the login page. As I said earlier, I can load Subsonic from any other machine out of the LAN, such as my work computer and it works fine. I don't know what has happened from a couple of days ago, which it worked fine from internal network.

What is the address of server and what subnet are you using for LAN?

When I type in my URL, (myaddress.subsonic.org), it returns 169.254.179.9 is not available, which is not my IP,. It works fine outside my LAN. Looked up IP and it said it was a local address.

Have you tried a router reboot?

Yes, tried that, deleted port forwarding settings and reset them. Don't understand the IP address though (where it comes from) as my ISP address starts with 24. As I said IP search on WHOIS reveals a local address.

169.254.179.9
I think I have seen this before, and if I remember correctly, I thing this is a problem related to DHCP caused by some ports being blocked by the firewall.

My suggestion, unless you've already done so, would be to set up a static route in the router to the SS server host computer, and manually define the internal ip address in the NIC on you server. I always use an address in the high end of the range, 192.168.1.25x to avoid DHCP conflicts. Also be sure to NOT use port 80 as most isp's either block or use it for gateway management.
