It keeps creating more players

Postby SteveyDevey » Mon Oct 04, 2010 4:52 am

Every time I look, there are more and more Players listed in settings>players.

It's like it creates a new one every time someone logs in from a different computer.

Right now, mine is showing it's on player 122. They're being generated for different users, but I don't see any reason for it. When i log in, my playlist is often empty, which is fine. But I think it's empty because it has created a new playlist.

Join the club. I'm on Player 179.

Subsonic likes to create new players when you login from multiple locations, or login and it's in the mood. I'm not sure what makes it decide to do it, but I have also noticed it makes a LOT of players.

I usually go delete them all from time to time. It doesn't really seem to matter though, mine's gotten past 250 without any performance problems... and the only reason it didn't get higher is because I cleared the players.

Cheers,
Kirk

Yeah, I find this insanely irritating, especially as I travel a lot and login from a different hotel all the time :(

If I am more stupid than you, does that make me better at something than you?

I don't think the location has anything to do with Subsonic's decision to create a new player. I'm not even really sure what the criteria for the decision are. It just seems to make a new player if it feels like it.

I notice that every time i connect from a different ip address it creates one. So as long as i connect from the same computer on the same network it won't create a new one.

That would make sense. But I have a static (well, not static but cached so long it might as well be static) IP at home. There's also a static IP at school... and my iPad connects through AT&T so who knows - but it uses iSub. Nevertheless I manage to easily compound 15 or 20 players in a few weeks.

Unless you're suggesting it's a different IP each time? So I go to school - new player, pull out my iPad - new player, go home - new player. I'd actually have an easier time believing that were the case...

Cheers,

I didn't have much of a problem with this until I started looking at Subair. Logging back into Subsonic I was suddenly confronted with 139 players. This is annoying. I don't understand why there would be a need to automatically create more than one player per user with the exception of an additional player for your cell phone.

it might not be too big a deal if there was a convienient way to manage the players in a way that allowed for bulk delete of unnecessary players

I don't understand what's a static IP in player settings? What is a difference between static and dynamic IP for server to work? I see in browser SS also creates cookies with player ID and session ID...

Automatically delete unused players after 30 days inactivity is a my feature request.

I have the same issue. Can't really say what the rules are for auto-creating new players, but I really see no need to create new players when a given user already has players...
