Shortcuts not recognized within directories

Postby BigD25 » Tue Dec 14, 2010 12:25 am

The directories in my shared "music" folder are listed as individual artists or bands but if a band or artist collaborate with another, I like to have the album folder in one of the artists' folders and create a shortcut for the other collaborator's directory in order not to duplicate files. Is there a way for these shortcuts to be recognized within Subsonic?

For instance, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint recorded River in Reverse. The directory of album files resides in 'Costello, Elvis' and a shortcut to that folder exists in 'Toussaint, Allen'. But the shortcut does not appear in the listing for Toussaint in Subsonic.

This helps reduce overall drive space and allows for more flexibility of organizational preferences. For instance, adding all Beatles recordings into Paul McCartney's directory.

Thanks, anyone else come across this?

You can't just create regular short cut links. What you could do is you can create a symbolic link, which looks like a short cut link...but is not. Read up on them a little at Symbolic Link

Then if you need further instruction let me know what operating system you are using along with some kind of example of your current folder structure.

For me I know if I wanted to do this I would have
mklink /D "M:\music\Paul McCartney\Beatles" "M:\music\Beatles"

Wow, thanks Emergence. I may have to wait until my cold medicine wears off before I can wrap my head around this.

My folder structure is \Music\artist or band\individual albums\album files

My directory is on a WHS machine. I guess I create these symbolic links in the directory I want a copy of the original to show up in?

Sorry I don't have any current WHS systems set up at my house to test out anything, so you might be on your own unless someone else throws in their two cents. Good Luck and let us know what works for you, or doesn't work for you in the end.
