Didn't Understand the Reply. Please check the server address

Postby jeffcavicchi » Thu Dec 23, 2010 11:03 pm

So...I just set Subsonic up at home yesterday, and everything was working fine. I was able to access the server from both my Chrome CR-48 laptop and my Android phone. We left this morning for a visit to the in-laws, and when I tried to use Subsonic in the car I got "Didn't Understand the Reply. Please check the server address." I had my sister go over to the house and log in on the computer I am using as a server, and when she tried to verify the connection she gets a 501 error. Anyone know what is going on? Is it something I can fix remotely? I'd love to have access to my music while I am away this week.

Thanks in advance!

So I assume my problem is that my server does not have a static IP address?

Possibly. If the router changes anything necesary to route the internet traffic to the server, it will fail. Most of the connection failure problems I've helped others solve are due to unexpected changes made in or by the router.

I never use port 80.

I set a static route to the server up high out of the way of DHCP. (192.168.1.254)

Define the address used in the NIC on the server.

The more you set in stone, the harder it is to break.

Finally, make sure SS uses the right port # in the SS control panel.

EDIT: Forgot to mention - uncheck plug and play block in the settings. uPNP seldom works properly. Can be found in Settings/Network - Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding). Make sure it is unchecked.

I'l have to look at it when I get home. The problem is I am using my work laptop as my server (I can do that since I own the company). So, I move the computer in and out of the house all the time, connect to other networks, etc. It would be much easier if I could just leave the server at home with a static IP...but that is not really an option. I'll try setting a static IP...will I need to unistall/reinstall Subsonic? Or create a new server?

No. You should be able to create a connection definition for the laptop to use at home that you select when you want it to run as the SS server. Not an ideal setup for an SS server, but doable. Just create a network connection and name it Subsonic Server. Then all you have to do is select it when it's on your home network.

Subsonic as a music server doesn't take much horsepower to run. you can easily grab a cheap refurb for very little money and setit up as an SS server. My current homeserver is a 3 year old quad core amd HP refurb with 4GB of ram that I only paid about $400 for back then. Subsonic doesn't even make it break a sweat. you can find refurbs under $200 that will run SS just fine. Set it up to sleep when not streaming media and configure Wake on Wan and you'll have something that works. Just add hard drives as library grows.
