Means that the service is crashing. Ther is most likely an underlying hardwareproblem or a software configuration issue that is shutting down the Subsonic service.

Try reading through the event logs just prior to the service shutting down to see if you can find a clue as to what is precipitating the crash.

I also noticed you're running Norton 360. Antivirus software has been known to cause a few disruptions from time to time. I use Avira and MS Security Essentials, both free and have had no problems for years. You might try installing one of them and disabling Norton to see if it has an effect.

Arggghhh!!! I made both of those changes, and it still keeps quitting on me. I often wonder if I am just one of a few people experiencing this- or is it a more widespread problem? Anyway- advice would be appreciated.

Nope, you aren't alone. And no, this isn't 'bitrot', or solar flares or voodoo curses. This has occurred to me before and after complete reinstalls, before and after applying the 'don't interact with the desktop' suggestion above, before and after multiple reinstalls of subsonic, and before and after searching the log files for clues (there are no, as far as I can see. Any warnings in the logs ('couldn't load a jpg, for example') don't coincide with when the server stops responding.

While I'm in no position to be an authority, I find it unlikely that it's hardware either: Subsonic isn't doing anything incredibly esoteric: it's a glorified web/file server, running on a VM, FFS. The hardware I am using here is a plain dell server 400SC. I have no antivirus or other meddlesome software running on this machine. There are a pair of bit torrent applications, neither of which have ever so much as hiccuped.

The server application is still running according to the windows task manager, and 'auto-running' according to the tray icon applet, which usually, though not always red, when it's down. Looking in the Services section of the administrative tools verifies that the server is running, just not responding. Stop and starting the server, or killing it in the task manager and restarting it, make no difference: only a full reboot does.

In any case, there is no workaround apart from a regular reboot, which may be unworkable in some situations, like mine.

Is this just a windows seven problem? I have not seen users on anyother platforms complaining about this.

I have the same problem on an Ubuntu 10.04 server.
Subsonic is up for a few days and then stops.

This is FUD. Like I said, I reinstalled the OS (actually, replaced the hard drive), reinstalled subsonic, the problem remained.

Is there a cap on memory used by Subsonic? If so, is there a way to increase it? I noticed that in the control panel section of SS, the "memory used" portion keeps going up: 21 MB...22 MB...23 MB... 23 is the highest I have seen, although it may go higher. I am curious if there is a cap, and if so- could I eventually be reaching it. Also- if this is the case, could it be caused by the size of my library, or a potential memory leak?

I keep mine set at 100MB in the control panel. I'm not sure if it fixes anything, I just have enough memory on the server and bumped it up to accomodate video streaming. But I'm sure there's no harm in setting it at 100 or higher. I think I had 200 at one time with no problems.

One user reports symptoms appear to have been fixed by raising the Memory pool in the Control panel. Click on the green icon, open the control panel, click on the settings tab and raise the memory limit. 100 is now the default, if your server is stopping at random try raising it to 200 or 256. Let us know if this helps for you.

I don't believe it's unique to Win 7. I am having the exact same problem and symptoms, only I'm running XP. I've tried changing multiple variables and can't see to pinpoint a solution. I hate to give up on Subsonic, I'm a donor, but it simply isn't working right now. I guess I can back-rev, but I kinda want those future versions as well, you know?

It has been awhile since I posted, but it seems that every time my SS icon turns red at the bottom of my screen, my "Memory used" is right at the limit. I increased the max to 200, and well- the application runs longer (1-2 days), but still eventually hangs. I believe this must be some type of memory leak. Java version is 1.6.0_06. Java is locked at this version because any later version conflicts with some Cisco network tools that I need to use.
