sharing a folder with multiple file types (music/movies/etc)

Postby bigfrick » Tue Jan 04, 2011 2:05 am

I have one folder I use for torrents, which contains a lot of music that I need to leave in that folder in order to keep seeding. The problem is, Subsonic shows all of my files while browsing my music (cant click them, but the file/folder names are there). Is there a way to make it only display the music?

Just create and copy your music to a sperate Folder for your Subsonic music. Storage is cheap, just bought a Samsung F4 2TB for $79. 1.5 or 1TB drives are even cheaper.

theres got to be a way to do this...audiogalaxy does it automatically, that should be an option in subsonic as well. Why would a music program show content that is not music?

Subsonic should only be displaying file types that are defined in the Music mask. You should not be seeing anything that isn't there. Check to see what you have in Settings/General - Music mask. If your using 4.3 there is also a block for video mask.

As for folders, any folders defined under Settings/Music folders will be displayed regardless of what's inside of them.

i must say, this is a huge blunder IMO and will probably be what pushes me back to audiogalaxy

I'm not sure how audiogalaxy does it, but it found and displayed all my music perfectly and didnt mistake any other folders as music. I'm guessing it goes by idtag info or something like that rather than just folder structure.

Subsonic also should include an optional "music finder" wizard at the initial setup to automatically scan for music instead of making the user input each folder

I like a lot of the features that subsonic provides that audiogalaxy lacks, but I dont want to keep a separate copy of all my music just for subsonic. Especially since I download new music every day and would have to continually add each new album to the subsonic music folder. What a PITA.

I still don't follow. What is SS showing, that you do not want it to show? You can easily limit the file extensions/file types in mask as Gary described. I add music all the time, and SS scans and adds automagically.

i have a folder called "torrents", within that folder there are many other folders and files, not all of them are music. So SS is showing all my folders, even if they contain no music.

For example:

Adele (music)
Akon (music)
The Ambassador (music)
And Soon The Darkness (MOVIE)
Apps (SOFTWARE)

etc.

simple solution

Postby 3R3 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 1:08 pm

simple solution would be to split your torrent folder into 2 folders, "music" and rest. then just let SS index the torrents/music folder.

And SS using tags for structure will never happen (hopefully) because IMO tags are just too shaky and noone seems to be able to put standardized tags. so for stabilities sake (its a server...) and speed i think this folder structure is great. you just have to handle it right :)

do you realize how much work that will require if I wish to continue seeding my music torrents without making a separate copy? That means I have to manually move each folder to the new one, and manually change the folder location in my torrent client for each music folder I move so that it will continue seeding. And I would have to do that for every new album/song i download. That would take days just to get through what I have right now.

you should always keep your seeds isolated, they should never be used as working copies.

copy them out of the torrent folder into your main folders or make your seed folder separate from your libraries.

Oh the pain of organization and planning ...

My parents always told me to be very careful where I left my seeds, but I'm from an older genration.
