Slow file transfers / stop transcoding to flv

Postby NinjaS4 » Tue Jan 18, 2011 8:51 pm

How can I get SubSonic to transfer files faster?
I have a home broadband speed of 3Mbps upload and 22Mbps download. When I access my SS server from a remote location and try to download files (currently trying to download a MP4 file with a 5Mbps download speed) I only get 100k speed max. Sometimes as low as 60k.
SS is running on a quick computer.
Broadband is not the issue, even over LAN it is slow.
Just one file, a zip of an entire album, or even a 1g MP4 file. I can't get it to transfer at a reasonable speed.
Is SS capping transfer rates?

Second, can someone tell me how to play my original MP4 files instead of transcoding to flash? I have tried all the player (load file in an external player) and transcoding checkboxes (taking out the MP4>flv transcode option). The only configuration that will play at all for me is to transcode MP4>flv and that isn't what I want.

Any help is apprecited. Thanks!

Very surprising. I play all my mp4 files directly to JW Player without any transcoding. Are you sure you are deselecting the transcoding in the Player settings as opposed to the Transcoding Settings screen?

The downloading definitely slows down when you download from within Subsonic. I might be out on a limb here, but it's just possible it's designed that way so that it doesn't hog all the bandwidth. If you have multiple users on the server and someone decided to do a download at the full potential of the network speed, it just might disrupt others using the server, but I'm just guessing.

The slow download speed is a limitation of jetty on windows. If you need faster download speeds than try using the standalone version. What version of windows are you using?

Thanks kermit22, I'm on Server 2008R2, but it's not a big deal for me.

The mp4>flv is something I can live with, but this slow speed wont allow me to take advantage of the video feature with SS4.3
I am running vista ultimate (not my first choice but that's what I've got right now). I have other file transfer programs currently running on the same machine that are much quicker this.
I was under the impression that I could install 4.3 on windows and stream mp4 videos. The speed cap makes this feature practically useless.
I'm not bashing ss in any way. I donated for 4.2, and will donate again when my video streams well. Until then, its just a tease seeing videos in my library and not being able to watch them remotely. Am I the only person with this slow transfer problem in a standard install on windows?
Thank you for your replies.

I'm still a bit confused as to why you can't stream mp4 in native format. With 3Mbps upload speed, you may be borderline for blue-ray quality, but you should have no trouble with almost anything at lower resolution, including std DVD. I playback mp4 without transcoding all the time at the full quality of the mp4, directly into JW Player. I've got 35Mbps upload speed, and even with that, blue-ray quality can be a challenge, but if I let it buffer for a few mins. it will play uninterrupted as long as I have decent download speed at the other end. Internally, it's flawless.

kermit22,

Does this also affect the playback speed of an untranscoded mp4? In other words, would the standalone version playback a blue-ray quality mp4 faster over internet connection than the Windows version?

Thanks

EDIT: Can you also explain the difference between the "stand-alone" and the WAR versions?

I misspoke. I should have said the WAR version instead of standalone. The standalone comes with an embedded Jetty server so it would have the same limitations as the normal windows install. If using the WAR version you need to have a web server already running, like apache tomcat.

In other words, would the standalone version playback a blue-ray quality mp4 faster over internet connection than the Windows version?

The speed limit will apply to any type of stream coming from the jetty server. In your case Gary it shouldn't matter if you use the Jetty or the WAR version because according to the jetty developers this is only a problem when using Server 2003 and XP.

There are some Jetty tweaks here:

http://docs.codehaus.org/display/JETTY/Slow+Win2003

I haven't messed with them at all because I'm in the process of setting up a linux server that I'm going to run SS from.

Check out these threads too.

I just happened to free up another box with an Athlon X2 and 4GB ram. If I install the WAR version, do you have any OS recommendation?

I'm using ubuntu for mine because it is the linux flavor i'm most familiar with it. In general Apache tomcat performs a little better on linux compared to windows. For a small subsonic install I doubt that it would matter which OS you use.
