XBMC

Postby wiseadam » Wed Jan 26, 2011 11:38 pm

I was looking into this as well when I started playing around with XBMC. I understand the XBMC is made for serving media, but mainly locally within the network. In my situation, I have a server sitting at another house because of the upload speeds.

Either way, I have it all, and want to share it without duplicating 300gb+ of music, and not being able to update the collection. So a XBMC type boxxee app would be a great addition for me, and everyone wanting to use it.

I don't know how to code, and in my mind I see it as easy as making it an application controlled full screen web page, but I know it may not be that easy.

I don't have any direct experience with either Boxee or XBMC but it shouldn't be too hard. I have a proof of concept plugin working on Plex and I'm planning on building it out as my time allows.

If you're interested here's the thread on the Plex forums: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/top ... ic-plugin/

You interested in a Plex app or a Boxee app?

I don't use Boxee and have no interest in (or time to be honest) learning their plugin system. A Plex app, on the other hand, is in the works for sure. I'll add playlists as one of the first features to support.

Indeed, that's what I stated in my first message.

But, I don't know anything about boxee plugin development and have no interest in learning. I do know how to develop Plex plugins, and I already have a Subsonic one underway.

Jonny,

I know plex is cool and all but I was talking about a boxee app!! For those of us with boxee box's it would be perfect to have. I am serious about the paypal thing if you do eventually plan on making one for boxee!!

Oh, for sure it would be a good addition to Boxee. But, there's only so many hours in the day and I won't have any to spare learning another system I'm afraid. Very unlikely it'll happen from me.

While I do not have a Boxee, you can buy a reclaimed, leased server or find an old computer someone is trying to give away for dirt cheap on craigslist and use that as the backbone for your media center with an HDMI or projector cable. I know because I just bought a 3 ghz, 40 gig hd, with 1 GB of ram for $80 on Craigslist. Buy a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard or use tightvnc with a laptop. Put a shortcut on your desktop to subsonic and voila! Subsonic from any computer, anywhere straight to your tv. I realize this may not sound like a gift wrapped setup like the Boxee offers with the touch of your remote, but the flexibility and price are second to none. You can even use your iphone or android to control it if you want. I can literally do EVERYTHING that I want and I laugh at all these commercials for google TV and xbox. WOW.....you mean you can search google for Kevin Bacon? My server is hidden behind my media center. The only way you would know there is a computer back there is by my wireless mouse and keyboard sitting on the side table next to my couch. No offense, but I think your time would be better spent with a more flexible setup than trying to code a solution for a box that provides you with narrow options when you likely already have an old computer with more functionality waiting for you to explore. Just my two cents.

I'm actually working on a Subsonic app for Boxee. It's still far from ready and development is going slowly because of school/work but rest assured folks it'll get done eventually if not by someone else then by me.

When I get home from work I'll post a shot of the UI and I hope to have something to play with in the next 2 weeks if my schedule permits.

Like I said earlier I would have no problem throwing a few bucks your way to encourage development and as thanks for your effort!!!!!!

once i'm actually done we can talk about donating.

The UI is a mess right now cause, coding for Boxee sucks. But I got a bit of it working. I can connect/login to Subsonic servers and as you can see it'll handle multiple servers.

Impressive!!!! My one request from you for the app would be a way to load playlists, if you had that in place I think that would put your app heads and shoulders above the music player boxee has in place currently!!!
