Ok, now I'm rolling back from 4.0. FFS.

I'm looking for alternatives to subsonic, since developer response to this doesn't look to be forthcoming - either here, or on the soundforge site.

Is there a better place to post bugs?

FFS. How disappointing.

Your not getting any response because you have a unique problem that is rooted in one or a combination of three places that only you can fix.

1) You have a corrupt install of SS.
2) You have corruption in your OS.
3) You have a hardware issue.

Judging from your previous posts, it appears that rather than accepting that many other users have found SS to be stable and useful, you'd rather rant about SS than search for the root cause of the problem. That's why the developer and the rest of the users here are just ignoring your posts. They realize that it's futile as long as you insist that there is something inherently wrong with Subsonic. That's not to say that there aren't bugs in Subsonic. There are, and every time I've identified one I've recieved a response from the developer and the status of if/when it can be addressed.

But, then again, I don't just rant that all my problems are the developer's fault.

YMMV 8)

Sure. It's just me. I'm a bitch and I haven't reinstall subsonic, reinstalled my OS, and tried this on multiple machines. What's more, I'm the only person who's having any problem at all.

Mr. Odd wrote:This happens to me periodically as well - running fine, then the service crashes (and I get an error message) and I've got my memory set to 1000 in the control panel!

Here's the message in the Event Log:
Faulting application subsonic-service.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module java.dll, version 6.0.230.5, fault address 0x00004e2f.

Is the problem with Java? It seems to have happened with older versions of Java as well.

phazzard wrote:I am having the same issue since updating to the newest version. I can get the service to stay up for 1-2 days before I have to reboot. I have a very large collection on a dedicated server with 6tb (About 500,000 songs). I have loved subsonic because it could handle the collection size with no issues. I have the memory size set at 1,000 and have never had any issues until this last upgrade?

jjwa wrote:I also have this issue. Also since I upgraded Subsonic (to 4.2 beta1), earlier I never had it.

Info:
Windows 7 x64
Not sure what my Java version is/was, but I see that it updated monthly, so it can't be very outdated.
Memory limit was left at the default 100MB (now at 250MB).
No router, no firewall, no virus software actively doing anything.

I don't use Subsonic daily, so I can guess only very roughly, but it seemed to happen every 2-4 days.

elueders wrote:It has been awhile since I posted, but it seems that every time my SS icon turns red at the bottom of my screen, my "Memory used" is right at the limit. I increased the max to 200, and well- the application runs longer (1-2 days), but still eventually hangs. I believe this must be some type of memory leak. Java version is 1.6.0_06. Java is locked at this version because any later version conflicts with some Cisco network tools that I need to use.

Flyby wrote:Restarted ss yesterday and now it´s down again. Last log entry is about the scan at 03:00.

I´ve about 35000 files. Is there a limit?

dmartin9 wrote:This issue seems to be ongoing. My server stays online for approx 2-3 days and then drops offline as well. When I pull up the Subsonic Control Panel all fields are blank. When I attempt to restart or stop the Subsonic service nothing happens. The only solution is to reboot the system. I have tried both the UUNP port setting and manually configuring a port in my router. This started occurring approx 2 updates ago. I am currently running 4.2 (build 1946). My collection size is as follows:

5,170 artists
3,242 albums
52,031 songs
446.98 GB (~ 6,943 hours)

I am running Subsonic on the following:
Windows 7
AMD Phenom 9850 Quad Core Processor
8 gig RAM

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated..!!!

The Subsonic service terminated unexpectedly.

billy bob thorton wrote:Hi all, I have an annoying situation. Since I have installed win 7, I haven't been able to keep a connection to the service for more than 4 or 5 days. After those 4-5 days or so, the tray icon turns red as opposed to the nice green! Still says the service is running however, it is not. I like to leave the server on 24/7 to access the music. I have tried to end the process and restart the process etc. however the only way to fix this is to reboot.

After the reboot the app service starts again and I am off to the races for another few days with a nice green tray icon until it goes down again. I am using the latest and greatest. It was the same situation with the previous version as well.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
I use NO IP as the DNS app so a dynamic IP isn't the issue. I also run another server on the same machine, different port, and it doesn't ever go down.

I am the only one who uses the machine and sometimes I am not on it for days, only to check on my server status!

P.S. when it is up and running, it runs great and I have no issues.

Any help would be appreciated. I searched the forums and didn't get a hit.
Thanks in advance.

.. since the 4.3 update, SS will crap out anywhere from an hour, to a day later. The system try icon says it's connected, the SS control panel says it's on (but it doesn't do anything when I try to stop/start it), and the only way to get it to work again is to reboot.

Starting the troubleshooting...

OK - Some of you are having issues. Some think it's Subsonic, I think it's individual configuration issues. I have 3 servers running on Server 2008 code base, which from all I've read is identical to the Win 7 core. All 3 of my servers were updated from 4.3 to 4.4 beta1 without any problems. All 3 run 24/7 and never crash.

Some of you are on Win 7 which, I guess could be a bit different from Server 08.

So let's experiment. I just set up a spare box with 32 bit Win 7 and installed it on an Athlon dualcore PC that I will leave on as long as any of you are interested. It is now online at http://garyj51.subsonic.org U & P = guest.

Let's see how long it takes to crash.

The music folder is on a server share so indexing and home screen random view may take a while to generate.

This install is version 4.3, I will be happy to do the upgrade to 4.4 beta 1 whenever it is determined that this configuration is stable.

I would like feedback as to how long you think I should leave this online in its current configuration before we reach consensus as to whether or not it is stable. I will then do the upgrade to 4.4 beta1, then reconfigure with 64 bit Win 7 and repeat. I realize that this may take as long as a month or more to run its course, but I know many of you have had this issue for longer than that, so I am willing to donate the use of my equipment and electric chgs. to determine if your problems are repeatable. Scientific method and all that. I'm only a windows guy, so I'm sorry I can't do this for other platforms yet. Maybe after we run this little experiment, I'll delve into Linix or something else depending on feedback. If there is anyone else capable of doing the same demo/experiment for other platforms, please jump in.

One hour and still running. I'm guestimating 5 days per configuration should be sufficient? I'm planning to leave this on 24/7 unless others suggest that the problems encountered are related to periodic shutdown/restart cycles.

Any other suggestions Walter?

PS: My wisdom isn't infinite, it is merely rational and objective.

Anybody care to guess how long this site has been running?

Why are you antagonizing people and stuck with this windows crap? I'm running fedora linux and have something going on with java processes hanging as well and several instances here of the same happening in ubuntu based linux as well.

I've been running subsonic for 5 or 6 yrs and I think that predates all your windows versions you are running and have seen numerous times java bugs crop up in libraries that Sindre is using and it takes java debugging to figure out what is happening.

ok people what is happening is java thread hangs and process hangs and we need to debug the java not talk endlessly about settings in windows and blah blah blah.

When it is hung you need to create a java core dump and post that on here. I switched from the war tomcat version to the standalone on fedora and have made a request to Sindre to find how to do a coredump on the jetty server since it is very different than the tomcat I ran previously.

This has been happening on certain systems for 3 to 4 revisions of subsonic and we need to figure what in the java code or libraries is causing the hangs.

Actually, if you read the entire thread, you'll find that others have reported the same issue on Win 7 and Win XP, as well as Ubuntu and Fedora. As always, many posters just mention the problem without even discussing their platform or any other relevant details. If you go back far enough, you'll see that the OP is on Win 7.

My apologies for offering to assist. I will refrain from posting on this topic further, as my efforts have apparently offended you. Anyone who would like my assistance or would like me to test on the server I have made available, is more than welcome to contact me by pm.

Good luck in your efforts to solve your problems.

I also am having stability issues. Running Windows 7 x64, I leave my server on 24/7 and keep the processor pretty active most of the time. I have a fairly large music collection (nearing 1 TB) and Subsonic stops working usually after a few days. The only solution is to force the process to end for the tray icon and then restart the service.

Same thing is happening to me. I've read all of the posts here and someone mentioned that they turned off the automatic scheduled indexing and it worked. I'm gonna try that.

Problem is I've gotten it more than once a day. I Just got one about 30 minutes ago and this is the error I got.

Code: Select all
[2/8/11 7:46:57 PM EST]   INFO   RESTRequestParameterProcessingFilter   Authentication failed for user null

I have my subsonic installed on my ReadyNAS. The guy who ported it recommended that I change the "SUBSONIC_MAX_MEMORY" in the subsonic.sh file. I don't know if that is a file he created in order to port it to the NAS, or if that is a file Subsonic comes with, but it seems to be working for the people on that forum.

I'm no computer wiz and don't know if this has been suggested but in the past, my Subsonic service would shutdown unexpectedly about once or twice a day.

After increasing the amount of memory that Subsonic is allowed to use to 512MB (Control Panel/Settings/Memory limit (MB)), Subsonic will run and never shut down unless I shut it down.

For references, here's some of my info that may effect the issue:
-Windows 7 Home Premium
-Subsonic V4.4 (build 2172)
-512MB memory limit
-70K songs
-Approximately 3 users accessing music at peak hours

Anyone get this figured out? It's really annoying to have to restart subsonic daily. I take long trips often and it sucks to not have my music with me.

This really should be a priority to the author of Subsonic. I have not even seen him respond to this thread yet.

Just want to report back here, that it's been a day and my machine has not turned off.

I turned off automatically search index. I'll keep you guys posted if it's stays up.

Edit:
Nevermind. Just checked and the server was down again. This sucks. So frustrated.
