How does subsonic handle connections

So when I got to work today the network security folks wanted to know why I had around 140,000 connections back to my home in a month.

Outside of occasional SSHing I rarely access anything at home besides subsonic. Does subsonic create a new connection for each song played? Is it using UDP or TCP for the media?

If it is subsonic any ideas for reducing the number of connections? Tunneling through SSH I've used in the past, but I'm thinking that HTTPS might be a better way to go.
