how to make donation?

Postby felios » Mon Jan 31, 2011 8:03 pm

the website says "you can give any amount you like" but I only see options for €10, €15, €20, €25, €30. How do I make a donation for another amount?

If you want to donate more than one of those suggested amounts, just make more than one donation.

10 + 25 :?:

12 would require higher math above my paygrade.

I thought he'd get the idea, but some are either a little slow or really are just that cheap. What's 10 Euro, $15 or so?

Duh, I got a computer, I pay $40 - $100 per month for internet connection, I've got a cell phone that I pay $50 - $100/ per month, but I'll be dammned if I'll give some developer my hard earned money for something he's taken years to develop and offer for peanuts. Besides, it's only a one time fee, you'd think he'd just let me have everything for free! After all I deserve it.

Get a life. Go read a good book on ethics.

So I guess "you can give any amount you like" the same way Subsonic is actually a "free" media streamer?
Freeware isn't exactly unheard of, you know, it's projects like the Humble Indie Bundle that are still new. But when a developer is misleading about his project, that's what makes me want to pay--I mean, "donate"-- as little as possible.

As has already been stated and restated ad nauseum in these forums, you can use the free version as long as you like without making a donation. You only have to donate if you want access to the premium features. So, really, you don't think SS is worth $15? I'd suggest you just move on to something that works for you, because you're not going to find too many sympathetic ears on this forum. Why not try Twonky Media and let us know how that works for you?

Give him a break, all he wants to do is make an initial payment of 50p, and then monthly payments of somewhere between £5-35 each month. Oh, it'd be nice if he could take money back from the amount he's donated as well, a bank function of sorts. You know, if he doesn't like the product anymore.

I must publicly apoplogize. Perhaps I am being a bit rude.

I spent 3 years trying to get streaming to work over internet on my HP ex485 Media Smart Server, with the Twonky Media that came with it. What a bust. Turned the ex485 into a book end and built a new server from the ground up after the HP chewed up 3 hard drives in one year due to the poor thermal design. We then tried another similar product that I can't even remember the name of, it too was a bust.

Then we found Subsonic. Wow! It actually works and does what it is supposed to do without killing the cpu, and with enough flexibility to be able to tailor it to virtually any harware configuration you can think of. SS is truly the answer to the problem I had been trying to solve for 3 years. Anyone ever hear the phrase "time is money"? After being ripped by the HP/Twonky debacle, which cost hundreds of dollars in lost hardware and lost time, SS was like water in the desert. Oh, what's that you say? It's free? With additional features available for a small donation? You've got to be kidding! Whatever happened to "you get what you pay for?" Obviously this is one of those remarkable exceptions to the rule.

So, anyone want to call me a "fanboy?" Fine, go ahead, I'm not offended. Just understand what I went through to get to where I am today with this project. But, if you're going to ask me how to donate less than $15 to the dev for all his hard work and dedication to the users here, you are definitely going to hear my opinion. Someone please tell me that there are other applications out there that work this well for such a small fee, where you can communicate directly with the developer, who then incorporates your ideas into upcoming releases, which roll out almost monthly. Does Sindre get to every idea I have in a matter of weeks? No, but he's also hearing from hundreds of other users at the same time. I'm just another bug in his ear. He gets both good and dumb ideas from all of us continuously. But then there times when I get an email from Sindre thanking me for my CONSTRUCTIVE input and an occasional request to test something for him. In every exchange, Sindre is always courteous and gracious and obviously dedicated to improving SS to the satisfaction of we the users. For that reason, yeah I've donated, more than once. And there have been a few occasions where my suggestions were resolved within days.

So, again my appologies to anyone I may offend, but I will rigorously debunk any suggestion that the developer of Subsonic is in any way misleading, disingenuous, or non-responsive. Wake up! Subsonic is worth way more than anything else available and it works better too. Not to mention its felxibility, cross platform capability, and customization features.

So go ahead, donate. Not with what you think you can get away with, but with a calculation balancing what you can afford and what you truly think this is worth to you. This is one developer who truly deserves our support.

You are all welcome to use my public site for your own testing, comparison, or just plain listening.
