Port issues possibly...

Hey everyone! Just started using Subsonic on my computer at college. It works perfectly, but I can't seem to get people outside the school to connect my link. I just donated money so it should be working right? I fear that it might be the schools routers. Does anyone know if there is a way around this so I can allow others outside of my college to use Subsonic?

Just to clarify one thing... you can have other people access your server WITHOUT donating... you need to donate to be able to use the PREMIUM features, which include streaming using any application BESIDES the built in web interface for streaming.

That being said, I imagine that your computer is behind a firewall that you do not have control over. Quick test:

If you go to a command prompt and type "IPCONFIG" (assuming windows is the operating system) you will see a line that says "IP Address."

Now go to this web site:

http://www.whatismyip.org

Does the IP address shown match the IP address displayed in the IPCONFIG command?

If not, there is something between you and the outside world providing Network Address Translation (NAT) services for you, and if you do not have access to that device, you will probably be out of luck.

Sorry for the extremely slow reply...I've been destroyed with school work lately. Anywho...that link you posted didn't load for me. I used whatismyip.com instead. I don't know if there is a difference or not. Can't imagine there is. They IPs however didn't seem to match.

When I typed ipconfig into CMD it returned a lot of bullshit about my schools network. I'm not exactly sure I'm looking at the right thing. I've seen the line labeled "IP Address" before on CMD, but that doesn't seem to be listed for some reason.

All I'm getting is Link-local IPv6 Address, IPv4 Address, and Default Gateway. Do these mean the same thing?

Yes.. the IPv4 address. But I'm betting they are not the same.

Unless you can get an inbound port mapping set up on whatever device is providing NAT for your school's network, you will be limited to streaming from inside the network...

Yeah it appears that firewalls make no difference either. Thank you though! I just needed some clarification.
