Can Not Play Anything In Firefox [Resolved]

Postby precipitous » Fri Feb 11, 2011 5:33 pm

I am running version 4.4 beta on Ubuntu 10.10. Everything has been working perfectly, and I have not made any changes. Now, suddenly, nothing will play in Firefox. Normally I use an external player (Songbird). When I select to play a playlist, normally I get the standard download pop-up asking whether I want to open or download, and what application to open the file in. Now when I select Play, the whole middle section of Subsonic (where the artist and album info displays) turns black, and nothing happens. This same behavior occurs even when I attempt to play to the built in web player... If I render the page using IE's engine via IE Tab, everything works fine.

I tried re-installing the Java Runtime Environment, but that did not help.

I tried to upgrade Subsonic to 4.4, but when I ran the .deb file I got a warning that a newer version is already installed, even though I am running 4.4 beta... WTF?

Did you try clearing cache?
Try another browser on another PC - maybe a mac or windows.
Sounds like you have a corrupted js file.

Clearing the cache did not work, but everything works fine on other computers... It's definitely looking like a local js problem.

Now if someone could just figure out why I can't upgrade from 4.4 beta to 4.4...

Updated information:

I was able to get version 4.4 of Subsonic installed by uninstalling 4.4 beta first. Unfortunately, that did nothing to resolve my Firefox issue. It is limited to just one computer, so I know that the problem is local (the affected install of Firefox is on a Win 7 machine at work). I have so far uninstalled and re-installed Java, uninstalled and re-installed Flash, cleared the browser cache, upgraded Firefox to the latest build and installed Firefox 4 beta (it gave same result)... Nothing resolves the issue. Whenever I click Play, regardless of whether I am using an external application, or the built in web player, nothing happens and the Now Playing area of Subsonic goes black.

HELP!

me too, same setup, same problem. it's broken for me in chrome, firefox, midori, and opera. tried some of the same things, regarding local java. i actually started out by installing ubuntu netbook edition, then the xubuntu packages. i wonder if that has something to do with it, as i have three other ubuntu 10.10 machines in the house that all work great, as well as at least one example of windows 7 and two different windows xp (not to mention an iPhone and three different Android devices).

any ideas are very welcome!

Stop server. Delete Jetty cache '/var/subsonic/jetty/XXXX/jsp'. Delete browser cache: Firefox -> Edit / Preferences / Advanced / Network : Offline storage -> Clear Now... Start server.

PP: Find in Synaptic and remove all 'gnash' packages. Also remove 'flashplugin-nonfree'. After this install only 'flashplugin-nonfree'

Thank you for the advice. Unfortunately, it did not work. If it is of any importance, my copy of Subsonic is running on Ubuntu Maverick, but the one copy of Firefox that is not working is on a Win7 machine... Do you have any other ideas?

After all of this time I finally figured it out. The culprit was VLC's Mozilla plugin... Disabling it resolved the issue.

Just to confirm what the OP discovered. The problem is indeed caused explicitly by the "VLC Multimedia Plugin" in the plugins section of Firefox.

This problem manifested for me under Ubuntu 11.10 running Firefox 9.0.1

When I disabled the plugin "VLC Multimedia Plugin" and restarted Firefox, I was able to play the JW Player in Subsonic. Prior to that, when clicking the play button in Subsonic, nothing would happen, as if I hadn't clicked it.

Thanks for discovering this fix, I've been banging my head on this one for a while.
