streaming/download while tethering

Postby pomeroy8 » Thu Mar 10, 2011 2:24 pm

I can't download music while tethering. I have Android Froyo and use the WIFI tethering while at the office for my personal internet usage. I can use Subsonic app on phone to browse/search/queue music, however, it won't start downloading anything until I turn tethering off.

Any ideas?

Thank you

If your tethered, why not just use the desktop browser instead of the app? I don't tether, buit I suspect that when you do the phone hands off all internet activity to the computer that's tethered and locks out the phone apps. Do any other browsers function on the phone when it's tethered or is SS the only app that can't connect?

Thanks for reply. Yes other apps work... gMail, gTalk, browser, weather ... and all aspects of SS work ... browse, search, album art, queue ... just won't download. Turn off tethering and d/l starts immediately. I want to use SS app for bluetooth headphones. I often leave tethering on when i walk at lunch. You incorrectly assume desktop pc is tethered. Id rather use phone.

Thanks in advance

Thanks again. @airwave what makes you say that? I would accept that if no other internet based app worked or no aspect of SS worked. l'm still prepared to "live with it". I find it curious and annoying. I'd like to know why this is the case. Maybe there is a SS or Froyo issue?

Thanks for your interest/time on my "issue"

We've had recent reports of cellphone networks performing QOS (throttling) of downloaded content, and it's safe to assume their looking at the file extensions to perform their packet shaping (ie. mp3 and similar extensions). That was one of the reasons behind wanting SSL support, since they're presently not shaping secure packets (I mean, would they discourage online transacations like online banking? I don't think so...).

OK. I, sort of, see the QoS argument although I have to ask why it works when not tethered since it's still an MP3.

just did quick test ... i could play an MP3 in the web browser on my phone while tethering is turned on. I could also download MP3 to default music player while tethering is turned on. (did random search for HELP.MP3 found a Beatles song).

Does this discount the QoS assertion?? My cell provider is Rogers (in Toronto, Canada) if this is helpful.

Thank you for your help.

one last thing (?). I have an Acer Liquid E. cheap phone, but it works. Just in case this is relevant.

Thanks for your support/help/time.

AHA! (I think). When you say tethered, do you actually mean you are simply on work's wifi? In the case of cell phones, tethering typically refers to using the phone's cellular network as a data-source for another client (pc, lappie,Nook,etc.). If downloads work over service provider, but not wifi, there is something blocking (firewall?) on the wifi router. Who administers your work's lan/wlan?

Thank you for your post. However, i do know the difference between tethering and connecting via wifi. I was actually on a street corner when i noticed this behaviour and therefore absolutely not connected via wifi. As i already stated turning tethering off started the download of the queued music.

I have a theory which i havent had a chance to test... your phone gets an IP address when connected to the carrier network. The SS app uses this ip to connect to my SS server. When you start tethering your phone is now a wireless accespoint. As such you create virtual IPs for connected devices. The phone now also connects via a virtual IP. SS is still connected to the original carrier IP (now your access point IP) and fails while browsing/searching uses a new connection (virtual) and succeeds.

Just a theory.

Theory confirmed? Initially phone IP adress is 25.*.*.* with tethering phone IP address is 192.*.*.* and tethering turned off again different 25.*.*.* address.

This according to Android system info app.

Not sure what to do next. Thoughts? Thanks

Actually the tethered ip of the phone is 192.168.43.1

192.168.*.* is usually your home network address when your phone is on your home WIF LAN. could SS "think" it was on wifi connection based on ip address?

Just part of the theory
