T-Mobile US started packet shaping mp3 files.

Just an FYI for US T-Mobile customers. I noticed late last week that my subsonic files weren't streaming in as fast as normal causing lots of long pauses during playback while subsonic on android started to catch up.

With some testing they're definitely shaping mp3 files to a download speed almost identical to the files bitrate. Ogg files download at full speed, as does anything else I've tried with the exception of mp3 files. They start out quick, then immediately (second or two) throttle back to 200kbps or so (for -v0 files).

Simple workaround for subsonic is to use SSL (https) since they can't packet shape encrypted packets.

Can't confirm this, seems to be working fine over 3G as usual, T-Mobile in South Florida. Getting 1MB of MP3 data in about 2 seconds.

Of course, on EDGE it's too slow for streaming.

I'm getting ready to switch to charter, and I'd like to get this set up before they get here.

I checked the box for using https on port 443, but ...how can I test to see if it's working?

does the initial connection still get established through the regular port? and then it goes https?

Yes, the connection is first established through the http connection and then handed to the ssl connection by Subsonic. I always recommend that ports 80 and 443 NOT be used by Subsonic. I use 8080 - 440, 8081 - 441, 8082 - 442 to keep it simple to remember. Any similar combination other than 8083 - 443, should work fine.

hmmm..changed it to 441 and it's not working. Do I need to set something up in the firewall for that too? seems like if the port is changed from subsonic, then it is just nat'd from there, no?

Yes the music will stream over ssl. I don't know if it will actually improve download speeds though. Much depends on the Carrier you use. I'm on Sprint and they've just nosedived on bandwidth accross the board as more users are getting smartphones. I don't think they're throttling, but the network just can't keep up with the increased load. I used to get really good 3g bandwidth when I bought my EVO, but sometime last fall I noticed bandwidth starting to fall off. XDA forums are loaded with peoiple complaining about it. At 3 AM I can get 1.8mbps down, by 8 AM I'll be lucky to get 256kbps.

Yeah, I remembered seeing this topic, I was thinking of it in the other direction though. You and I both have EVO's and my Sprint 3G is still plenty fast to keep up, my concern was that Charter doesn't want me serving music from my home...so I wanted to keep the identity of what I'm streaming as secret as possible.

I've always struggled to get over 1mb on 3g.
BTW, I don't know if you remember me (you help SO many people around here) but I was asking about my CM7 with a custom kernel the other day and you tested my server and I tested yours..both were fine for the other. Anyway, I changed the govener in CM7 to Conservative from OnDemand and subsonic has been AWESOME since then. Not sure if someone made a code change in CM7 or the newest kernel, and it's working too well to mess with. I took my evo off the charger Friday morning and didn't have to put it back on until this morning at about 10 AM. obviously that's very light use, but I did some subsonic over bluetooth on my way home Friday night. I know this isn't the place for that bit..but...I figured you'd look again.

Theoretically, I'm supposed to be subject to similar restrictions with Verizon regarding hosting a server. That's one of the reasons I never use 80 or 443 for the server ports. So far, I haven't recieved any complaints or warnings from them.
