Desparate to get Video working -i've tried for weeks

<-------------------------Subsonic Help Request---------------------->
Problem Description: Cannot stream video files at all (my entire collection is .m4v files generated by Handbrake 0.9.5 in AppleTV2 format IIRC)
Troubleshooting Steps: Videos do not play even when attempted from the OSX server that is running Subsonic on it. Not a network issue. So, with the recommended flash transcoding according to Sindre's main "Transcoding" web page, I continue to get the File Does not exist or access denied message. When I turn off transcoding altogether, I get the spinning wheel like it's trying to play the movie, but it never appears. Again, this is directly from the FF browser running on the Mac-based Subsonic server. Not a network issue, movie files are stored locally on that machine also.
Playback Application and version: Firefox browser, Safari browser.
Subsonic Version: 4.4 real release (not beta)
Server Version:jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_24, Mac OS X (58.7 MB / 114.2 MB)
Hardware Platform: Mac OSX Server - 10.6.7 on Mac Mini with 4GB RAM, nothing else running on it but Subsonic
Java Memory Limit: 1GB
Last ten log file lines:
Output from ffmpeg -i: (If you open a command prompt and type 'ffmpeg -i <filename>' what is the output? I get command not found, but I think on a mac i may be doing this from the wrong directory or something. Please inform.

Log from when I turn OFF transcoding

Postby manwithaplan » Tue Apr 05, 2011 12:31 pm

Okay, so if I turn off transcoding, and try to play my .m4v natively, here is what i get when i'm seeing just the spinning circle, waiting and waiting forever for the video to start...

[4/5/11 8:28:00 AM EDT] INFO PlaylistInputStream brian listening to "Movies/When Father Was Away On Business - Director Interview.m4v"

So, it says I'm watching it, but trust me, it never plays...just the spinning circle in the browser..tried opening in a separate window, same result.

Okay, so I turned transcoding back on, and I grabbed a different .m4v, one without chapters, and much shorter (20 minute video), to simplify the log file...here it is...

When Transcoding, Video Not Found or Access Denied

Postby manwithaplan » Tue Apr 05, 2011 12:45 pm

Just for the record, the window displays Video Not Found or Access Denied, anytime I have .m4v transcoding to flv. I've tried different transcoding strings, none helped, but the one I'm using now is the standard that Sindre recommends on the Transcoding web page of subsonic.org...namely this...

ffmpeg -ss %o -i %s -b %bk -s %wx%h -ar 44100 -ac 2 -v 0 -f flv -

I've also tried bumping up my browser cache just for fun, nothing changed.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I've donated twice and will donate again if I can get this working. [/img]

ffmpeg -v 0 -ss %o -async 30 -i %s -f flv -b %bk -r 23.976 -s %wx%h -acodec copy -

Give this a try.

JW will only play mp4 or flv natively.

ffmpeg -v 0 -ss %o -async 30 -i %s -f flv -b %bk -r 30 -s %wx%h -ar 44100 -ac 2 -

May be another possible setting worth trying.

Thanks. I tried both of those and get the same result as before. Doesn't work. By the way, m4v is exactly the same as mp4, so JW player should play it natively just like mp4. It's just a different extension for the same exact encoding MIME type. It's what Handbrake uses by default on a Mac anyway when converting. Plays fine everywhere an mp4 plays.

Other ideas to try???

Try just changing the extension.

I just downloaded and tested an m4v. Ran fine using:

ffmpeg -ss %o -i %s -async 1 -b %bk -s %wx%h -ar 44100 -ac 2 -v 0 -f flv -

It's a 1280x720 sample video from Panasonic.

Yeah, I see that it's working for you. Just played it on the same browser as mine for consistency sake. Weirdest damn thing, I cannot figure this out! I see you are running on Windows Server 2008R2 where I am running on a Mac, but we are using the same java version, the same jetty version. I re-indexed my site and re-cut and paste your encoding string in there, making sure to tell my player to also transcode for type m4v and mp4 both. It still gives me errors. I found the transcode directory and ffmpeg is in there just fine, just not sure what else this could be.

Thoughts?

http://a.img-dpreview.com/news/0905/gh1movies/00021.jpg

This is the file I downloaded for the test, from this page:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0905/09051 ... review.asp

Download the same file and test to see if it works. If it does, then there must be something different in the file structure that you're usiing. If the sample works, we can start looking at how your source files are being formatted.

I noticed you're using handbrake, what format are the original files?

I'll try that now...my process goes like this:

1. Use MakeMKV to rip the BluRay/DVD sources to end up with a .mkv file with the movie and usually Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track (not TrueHD usually), sometimes DTS core.

2. Use Handbrake with the AppleTV2 preset typically to transcode to .m4v (same as mp4), preserving the surround sound track as the AppleTV2 preset does.

3. Tag with Subler, insert into iTunes library for streaming to AppleTV.

My guess is that this is where the problem lies. I seem to remeber that SS doesn't like 5.1 audio and really wants just 2 channel. I'm no transcoding expert, but if you search some of Stozher's posts you might find some relevant information. Stozher really knows this stuff, but I haven't seen him active on the forum for a few weeks.

Nope, test file that you pointed me to, which works on your machine, is not working on mine, and resulting in the same errors as all my other videos. So it's not my encoding that's the problem. It's something in my Mac-based Subsonic setup, or with ffmpeg or whatever.

Error again is Video Not Found or Access Denied, every time.
