All those posts that I have seen on the issue don't seem too optimistic on an update to the sidebar api. But if there is something I can do in SubGadget to avoid this, then by all means I will. Unfortunately with only one report it's hard to really determine if it is a machine specific issue or not. Do you have another vista or 7 machine (or know someone that does) where you can try the gadget out on?

SubGadget 2.5 Release

Postby kramttocs » Thu Apr 14, 2011 2:23 am

SubGadget 2.5 Release

http://code.google.com/p/subgadget/

Added Features
1. Ability to edit playlist [delete tracks, rearrange tracks, rename playlist]
2. Ability to save playlists to server [if permission allows it]
3. Ability to save playlists locally [set folder in Settings]
4. Show visualization [click on the tiny black area in the top right corner. Double click on visualization (Win7) or on the tiny black area to go full screen]
5. Ability to have Cover Art transitions [set in Settings/Customize]
6. Mini Mode [click on the tiny black area in the top left corner to toggle between Mini or Full]
7. Code optimization and cleanup
8. The gadget now pings the server periodically in an attempt to keep the session active so it doesn't timeout when the player isn't playing, on pause, or stopped. If you receive a Connection Error (4) you will need to open the Settings dialog and press OK to reconnect

Bug Fixes
1. Added a better server connection valid check

You're all very welcome - glad it's useful! And thanks to everyone for the feedback that has got it this far.

I forgot to mention about the visualization though:

To change the visualization, close the gadget, play a file in Windows Media Player, change the visualization to what you want, close Windows Media Player, re-add the gadget to the sidebar.

In short, the gadget will use the last used visualization that was used in Windows Media Player.

If you go fullscreen with the visualizer and right-click it you get a whole list of options. Could you change the visualization from there?

Also, using the "show desktop"-button on my keyboard hides/shows SubGadget. I don't know if this is intentional, but it's pretty cool. =)

Hey erik,
In your context menu while in fullscreen, Visualization is an option? I don't see it on mine but yes, if it is there I would think that you would be able to change it from there.

Glad you like the 'show desktop' feature :) But yeah, I can't take credit for that one (and I know some would like to not have it work that way-which is understandable as well). It's because of the WMP that the gadget is using that makes it hide/show. Windows interprets it as a regular window rather than a gadget.

Ah, no, no visualization, I haven't used WMP in years, so I thought maybe the visualization was listed under plug-ins.

It would be great if it could be changed this way or via the gadgets Settings but I haven't been able to come up with anything yet that works.

Since I went to the newest version, I have had no recurrences of the memory issue.

Also, if I can put in a humble feature request... one of my favorite uses of the web version is to be able to play a random list of songs, but filtered by a genre. Do you think that could be added?

Thanks!

@davidthomp84 - glad you like it!

@David - I am really glad to hear that the memory issue appears to have gone away - keep me updated if it ever happens again. Your request has been added to the list and should make it into 2.6 :) On the same topic, I also plan to allow the number of random songs returned to be specified in the settings in the next release rather than only being 30.

love it!

May I suggest a 'micro' display option too which just has media buttons and the song title (no album art).

Also there is a small bug where the visualizer is in front of the search pulldown menu. (Running on Win 7 x64).

Good catch. I will get that taken care of. The visualizer has to be on top of everything else which is an absolute pain.

I have also added 'micro' player to the list. Are you talking about something from the bottom of the album art/visualization down or not having the time/progress bar either? And do you want the black media buttons or the gray ones that show in mini mode?

The progress bar would be cool. As far as the details are concerned, I'll leave it up to you on what you feel works best. I was just envisioning something very simple and low profile.
