Help with two issues, please

Postby M&M » Sat Apr 16, 2011 5:33 pm

I am new to Subsonic but not new to computers. And yes, the answers to my questions are probably in the forum somewhere - but my searches didn't yield results and I am a bit impatient.

1) I noticed a significant slow-down in my server recently. Searches are especially slow. Is there a relationship between number of songs and performance? Are there any tricks to improve performance? (notes: search was not updating; only one user was logged on; problem occurs at various times and locations; computer specs below).

2) I've noticed a number of songs are "clipped" - that is the song maybe be 3 minutes long in MediaMonkey or WMP, but only 30 seconds in subsonic. What would cause this to happen? Is there a fix?

THANK YOU for your assistance and advice!

Even though you have a large library, once the initial scan has been done without interruption, successive scans should be speedy. I'd try a re-scan and see if that resolves the issues. Is there anything in the XP logs (or any logs) that show any clues?

THANKS! for the reply.

The server was created about 3+ months ago. Initial scan was fine and uninterupted - as was subsequent scans. The problem just started in the last week.

Just checked the XP logs and found nothing...

I was hoping there might be some quick fix or easy answer.

There's only 11% disk available. Does subsonic need more?
I was considering changing to a 3TB disk.

I was also considering reinstalling Subsonic. Are there any "gotchas" to that possible fix?

Did you try a manual rescan? I think I'd try stopping the SS service, deleting the subsonic.db, then restarting service, before a full reinstall. This will clear user data, etc. I don't think 11% available is the issue, but I'm also wary of drives that begin having access issues, etc. (soft errors/hard errors) so I'd definitely recommend a backup ASAP, just in case it's a hardware problem.

THANKS Alphawave7. I ordered a new disk. Too last on your advice. I did a full reinstall and rescan. Seems to have improved some... but still slower than before. Will keep testing and check - more suggestions welcome!

It's always backed-up to a LG-NAS device. Learned that lesson the hard way.

ANY THOUGHTS on the "clipping" of songs? I checked a sample of individual files with MP3 Diags and didn't find anything...

That IS peculiar. I was thinking an interrupted scan would result in some tunes being truncated. I would try taking one of these files out of the db, launch a rescan, then add it back in and rescan again, to see if it's still truncated. Repeated replication of the issue helps narrow down it's culprit. :)

Tried that with a sample file. Still didn't work. Plays perfectly in WMA and MediaMonkey, but truncates in Subsonic.

I've found about 2 dozen files with a similar problem. Doesn't seem to have a pattern or easy to find cause...
