+1

But storing the rating in the ID3 tag would make it unsuable for me as the files are automatically overwritten from their source every day.
Please consider having the ratings in the database and the tagging only optionally.
That would also allow user specific rating.

+1, i loved this feature on my zune. Every song had a "heart", "broken hearted" or null status. I'd "heart" all the songs i liked and then made a playlist of all those songs. I miss this feature dearly.

+1 - Registered just to chime in. I've been using subsonic for about a year now, and this is really the biggest feature that's missing. Like lots of other people have mentioned, my playlists revolve around per-song ratings (Media Monkey user here).

I agree that the rating should be read/written to the ID3 tag (although after looking at the ID3 spec, it doesn't look like there is a specific field for rating). Not sure how media monkey does it, but they store ratings in their own database, then let you save ratings into the id3.

+1. This is also one of my most desired features from Subsonic. Not sure about MP3 but I know WMA tags have dedicated rating metadata. Per-user ratings as an option would be nice too although global ratings stored in the files are more important to me.

+1 and bump, I too think adressing the statistics issues is more pressing, now that video is in and works.

I'd also be very interested in this. I've just bought a Subsonic license as AudioGalaxy for Android has increasingly been getting on my nerves, and the only thing I'm really missing is decent ratings integration.

I'd like Subsonic to use a rating system that's highly compatible with Winamp, in that it reads and writes ratings from and to ID3 and the other tagging systems that are out there. Winamp uses the POPM field, IIRC...

Or maybe importing/exporting iTunes style databases? That way I could set up a batch job that synchronizes Winamp (and the files' rating tags) with ratings newly added from Subsonic easily...

Yes, this feature would eb awesome, BUT:

Please, for God's sake, do not let subsonic edit the mp3 files (id3 tags i mean). Keep these ratings in a separate database.

It's way easier to work with a separate database anyway (making toplists, etc)

If Subsonic doesn't update the tags, how is Winamp supposed to know the rating was changed? ;)

Agree completely

I was just going to post this same request. Rating individual songs would be stellar. That way I could make an auto playlist of awesome songs and shuffle those for a great listening experience.

This feature could easily be achieved using the Last.fm API track.love command http://www.last.fm/api/show?service=260

See my other post regarding Last.fm integration and feature requests: http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6318
