Slimmer Devices for Server

Postby cslink » Fri Apr 29, 2011 4:32 pm

I would like to take advantage of two features of Subsonic:
1. Streaming via network
2. Local music output which would feed into an amp.

But, I would prefer not to dedicate a PC to Subsonic (since it would be sitting in a closet creating heat).

Our media resides on a Dlink DNS-321.

Is there a small *nix based device that could run the server software and also has audio out for the jukebox function?

On what non-PC devices have you successfully installed Subsonic?

I would just set up am atom powered nettop to do this if it were just for music. The link to the tutorial lists several NAS devices that have been found to work with SS, but for just a few $ more a nettop gives you a lot more power/flexibility and still keeps power consumption (heat) to a minimum.

Here's a nice option,

Once it's set up, disconnect the mouse, kybd, monitor and run as a headless server anywhere.

I'd suggest the ASUS line.

Just keep in mind that these use 2.5 in drives and only have room for one.
