Inconsistent last.fm scrobbling from Android app

Postby mttsndrs » Wed Apr 20, 2011 5:31 am

I'm happy to see the new scrobbling functionality on the Android app, but it seems a little inconsistent at the moment.

For example, today I listened to two albums in the car using Subsonic. On returning home and looking at last.fm, 4 out of 7 tracks played had been scrobbled from the first album, and 5 out of 7 from the second. It's not clear why those missing 5 tracks didn't get scrobbled since for the most part I listened to the albums straight through.

I have seen more extreme examples where no tracks at all were scrobbled from a listening session, and sometimes it works fine and scrobbles everything. Is it possible that the mobile network is failing to make the necessary connection at times, and the Android app doesn't retry to scrobble the track (or does retry up to a set number of times, then fails)?

Some of the other last.fm clients I've seen keep a queue of tracks that have been listened to and scrobble them all when they are able to connect.

I encounter the same problem, but with much bigger severity: only the first track of an album is scrobbled, the rest ignored.
I checked the logs and see "PlaylistInputStream - sigma listening to..." with 5 seconds later "AudioScrobblerService - Successfully registered now playing..." for the first song of the album. Since I selected infinite preloading (I like my android cache to only consist of full albums) I see the remaining tracks of the album passing by fast after they were downloaded to my phone, but no scrobbling. The actual listening took an hour, but nothing was scrobbled.

I think I understand the logic in not scrobbling preloaded songs, but there should be a mechanic that scrobbles the songs I listen to, preloaded or not. E.g. by sending a small "listening to" message to the server when a user actually listens to the song or by making the last.fm integration client side with the last.fm android app (i.e. Winamp).

Inconsistent last.fm scrobbling from Android app

This is definitely broken. In fact, more often than not it doesn't work for me.

I have an 'admin' account and a 'user' account on my Subsonic (Linux) server, both of which are linked to the same Last.FM account. The Android app is registered to my 'user' account, and Last.FM scrobbling is ticked.

Very occasionally, it will scrobble properly. But most of the time it simply doesn't do it at all. The log files provide no useful information - in fact it looks like for some reason it's simply not even trying to scrobble the tracks.

I know it's configured properly because sometimes it works! And scrobbling from the web application (from both accounts) works perfectly.
