Thanks for the app -- my whole family loves it. Put the music on the server and it is available to the whole family.

This incident does bring up a question, though. I was under the impression that subsonic only used your servers for name resolution. During the incident, I could get to my server just fine via web or looking at folders, just not looking at music.

What else does subsonic rely on? This opens the bigger question, if subsonic.org went dark or became poisoned again, how do I ensure my service is available?

Thanks again.

You can use any DNS service with subsonic. I use my homserver's DNS service to connect frequently. You can also just use the external ip and the port number to connect. http://108.17.27.224:8082

Thanks for the feedback. I guess my point was that the names were resolving just fine, yet my service was not operational.

I am concerned that in addition to DNS there is additional unknown reliance on subsonic.org.

As always, I could be wrong.

I *think* what may have happened here is the initial browser calls were relying on DNS cache, so you were indeed hitting the site and naving (as nothing had changed wrt local IP access). When selecting music folders, a new request was NOT going through cache, and was going to the subsonic.org server, which in effect was a dead end. To my knowledge, ONLY the forwarding is effected by the subsonic.org server, not actual usage of Subsonic. Sindre please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Subsonic operates locally on the computer it is installed on. Ther is no necessity to interact with Subsonic.org for it to operate at it's full functionality. Setting up the redirection to the server with the subsonic.org address is just a convienience, as you can easily connect using the alternate methods I've mentioned. In your case, it is most likely that your server is not running properly. Check the local instance on the host computer to see if you can connect from inside your network.

You may be right. I did a quick snoop of traffic, no small feat since netstat currently shows 2077 open connections, and did not find anything which jumped out. This may have been a DNS issue all along. It sure did act strange for being a DNS issue, tho.

Thanks again.

I'm using the Droid incredible and I've actually had this problem for about a week and half now, and I thought it was just my reception. However, I've never had a problem like this at all until again, recently. Sometimes it would take a sec to load up the songs, and when I do play them, it says it's downloading the song, but stays at 0kbs. Doesn't move at all.

It got to the point where sometimes it says "No music found", too. I think every once and awhile it would probably play one or two songs before it would stop working again. I haven't changed anything on my phone or PC and now it starts acting up.

I've tried stopping the application manually through the phone settings and even tried reinstalling it but it still doesn't work. Now it's to the point where I can't even connect to the server, just times out.

I'm using a WRT54G Linksys router, enabled ports from 4040, 8080 and even 8081 and still have had no luck. Maybe I'm missing something?

Edit: I solved the problem, apparently the ip wasn't being recognized correctly because of a number being off. I still find it weird that it was working without tempering with the router to begin with, and all of a sudden it just stops working. I'll post back if there's any further problems. :B

Let me clarify: The myname.subsonic.org service is not based on DNS but uses HTTP redirect to forward the REST requests to the user's server.

For instance, if you type http://sindre.subsonic.org in your browser you will be redirected to http://79.161.78.5.

I have this problem on my HTC Desire HD. It's running Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3).

I have never been able to get this working on my phone. It works great inside and outside my home network on PCs but whenever I try and use the Android app it repeatedly tells me that it can't find any music.

My Subsonic install is on an Ubuntu 11.04 server (i.e. the Ubuntu Server install not the Ubuntu Desktop install).

Can anyone confirm perhaps that it is Gingerbread that is the common factor or is it occurring on Froyo/Eclair as well?

I'd really like to get to the bottom of this so I can have my music on my phone. The only other perhaps unorthodox thing is that I have my music content stored on a NAS drive that is automounted on the server at boot time. The folder structure on the NAS is Music\Artist\Album\Tracks as per the recommendations. If I get time I will try and put some music locally on the server and see if the Android app can see it then. I'll post back in due course but it is unlikely to be today.
