I will test tonight when I'm at home on my wireless LAN.

If need be, we can do a direct hook up to give you a hand.

Thanks. Mine was set to 100. I increased to 512.

I will report back in a few hours, thanks guys.

Hi Dispatch, if the server is really running out of memory, and increasing the available memory to 512MB helps, my test with the smaller amount of songs is pretty much moot. You can also keep an eye on the memory usage in the control panel - try to reproduce your problem and see if the memory usage goes above 100MB :)

I'm back.

The error just occurred when I was connecting to Gary's site (after being connected to mine).

So... looks like either the phone software environment or the phone's data connection as being the culprit.

I'm currently running a Motorola Atrix on AT&T; Android 2.2.2. Rooted; SBF'd 1.26 > OTA 1.57 > OTA 1.8.3; so pretty close to stock.

I think I'll try making sure the data connection is "hot" before using SS and see if I can reproduce the error. (I'm also still going to try a smaller batch of songs and over wireless LAN).

I realize this problem may be so small in scope as to affect only me or a few others, so I appreciate yours guys' help thus far. Any other suggestions?

Like I said - try WiFi. If it works there, you'll know it's AT&T...

Almost all of the users that have trouble with the Android app are Motorola users of one sort or another. There are threads that talk about the media platform they use as being the source of the problem.

Why am I not surprised? (Although overall I'm pretty happy with the Atrix.)

Testing with WiFi was inconclusive (mostly because I didn't get much time to test) so far. I will report back.

Thanks again guys.

Stagefright was what I was trying to remember.

I think page 6 in this thread has the relevant info.

Ha! Thanks, Gary. I just found this thread after you suggested many people with Moto phones were having Android client issues.

Sounds like even though I'm running 2.2 I'm not using stagefright.

I do see the stagefright settings set to false in my build.prop.

Any reason not to try changing these to true a la page 6, even though I'm not running the same phone?

Sorry, I use an EVO 4G. I don't know, but if it were my phone, I'd probably give it a try. YMMV

After editing my build.prop and changing the stagefright settings to true I am still encountering the problems (both the initialization timeout and the brief pauses in playback cited in the thread Gary linked to).

Ah well -- it's still usable but not reliable enough for me. :-(

I suppose at this point I'll just wait until if/when 2.3 gets released for the Atrix to see if that helps.

Thanks for your input guys.

Re: Intermittent problem on android: "A Network Error Occur

I just found this thread. I purchased a Motorola Atrix2 this weekend (Android 2.3.5). I installed the SS client and twice so far it has given me the "Network Error" message. It seems that this is happening when I'm sitting in my vehicle in my driveway (just on the edge of WiFi service). I then drive off and then my WiFi disconnects, but SS client still has issues connecting to the server. This just happened to me :-(

My guess, is that this is related to a DNS issue. The reason I say this is that I set SS to use the DynDNS external name. I if I access that name from INSIDE my network, everything is fine. Outside as well. BUT, the IP changes between outside (98.xxx.yyy.zzz) and inside (10.0.0.z). So it seems that I need to force a DNS flush. This is my 2nd day with an Android phone, so I have no idea how to do that. :-) Or if the phone does do the DNS flush, it seems the SS app is somehow still using the old IP address. I'd love to test this further, but I'm not sure how. If there's a terminal app I can install on the Atrix, maybe that can give me an answer. I can try a ping by name and see what the IP comes back as. I suppose, if I have to, I can return this phone, and just get a Nexus S until the Galaxy Nexus comes out...

My Setup:

Ubuntu 10.10 x64
pfSense 2.0 release
DynDNS

I'm also still getting this intermittently, with multiple Android versions on multiple devices.

My issue seems to NOT be related to a networking issue. The subsonic process on my Ubuntu machine took off to 100% CPU usage. I'm trying to restart the service to see if that fixes the issue. I have no idea why it's doing that.
