Postby Schakine » Fri May 27, 2011 8:14 pm

Hi there,

I have made a donation this afternoon and suddenly could not communicate with subsonic server..
after a few hours of twicking etc..I had found out that it works again only when i disabled Windows firewall..even if the two subsonic exe are present in the allowed progras in the firewall
do somebody knows what is going on!?? and how i could fix this
Thank you

Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ enter your SS port number and click the Check box to be sure the Subsonic port is open.

And more...
But everytime i reopen the firewall the port is locked
When i close the firewall everything gets smooth again and i can stream my contents again...
All exe are in the fire wall and i even opened the port separately but nothing works
If i cannot change that i will let windows 7 firewall open for ever

Using 8081 after having try 8080
It worked for a while and suddenly stopped
I have noticed when i do not use windows 7 firewall i can stream much higher (2000) than when it was working with the firewall however..
I am not a network expert but i suspect this has to do with a windows 7 64 bits update

Background updates will slow other transfer speeds, but firwall settings shoudn't affect SS bandwidth. I've never run into that as an issue. Win 7 firewall can be a bit confusing, but it shouldn't be too difficult to fix.

I did some modifications:

I'm running connected to the Home (private) network definition.

Go to, Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Firewall and open Advanced settings.

Select Inbound Rules

You should see 2 entries each for Subsonic Agent and Subsonic Service.

Mine read:

Profile: Private
Enabled: Yes
Action: Allow
Override: No
Program: SS installation location
Local Address: Any
Remote Address: Any
Protocol: TCP
All the rest read "Any."

If you double click on any entry you can also manually specify the ports, but it shouldn't be necessary. If everything checks out on the firewall, there is most likely still something wrong on the router.

If you pm me the SS address, I'll check to see if it'll bring up the logon screen from here.

You really DON"T want to leave your firewall down. If you do you'll have much bigger problems than just Subsonic not working.

Thank you for trying to help me...
I shall try to keep all rules in private mode as they are public too for the moment
And set rules as you have have done
And let u know if i can get this port open
I do not see how the router could be involved as when i shut off windows firewall,it works no problem going through the router with no sign of block at all..
You are right i should not keep the firewall open even if my router got his own firewall too

Ok Now I know what is going on and this could help others...
64 bits Windows built in firewall does not like Soundsonic application too much as it is basically all written in Java and Java can be used for naughty hacking..
Tell you what to do when it is blocked..
Put the inside firewall off and download Comodo a free firewall and open soundsonic on it..works without problem!
do not use others free app like zone alarm: same problem than windows 7!
Have fun!

Windows firewall works fine. I've installed SS on Win 7 32/64 bit platforms repeatedly without any issues. Subsonic automatically configures itself in the firewall during installation. Any problems with Win firewall are merely self inflicted pain.

Re: Windows 7 firewall suddenly blocking subsonic..

I just came across the same problem and I could not access the subsonic server in a private (home) network. I added 'Private' to the firewall rules and it all worked fine. In my case, I turned off the 'Public' access as I do not require it.

To make the change, I went into advanced settings on the windows firewall (from the Control Panel) and found the Subsonic incoming rules. Double click on each one, change to the 'Advanced' tab and click on 'Private'.
