movie streaming fine 20 minutes then the picture gets itchy

Postby Schakine » Tue Jun 07, 2011 8:33 pm

Well i stream movies from my pc both mkv and avi to an Acer A 500 tablet
Everything fine the first twenty minutes then the pictures lags and become more static
Had increased memory on subsonic tray icon toi 1200 without success
Of course,i can watch to the end and the sound is fine but it is quite desapointing as the start is just fine
Do someone knows what i can do?
My tablet has a good memory built in and i had increase the cache to one Go without success either
Thank you

It might be an issue with the transcoding on the host PC. I updated ffmpeg to a newer release that enables the use of more than one core for the transcoding, and that helped a lot. Video performance also works the best when you bypass the transcoding altogether and do the playback in a format that plays natively. i use mp4 for the desktop and flv for mobile playback.

I'll sleep when I'm dead.

When you're retired, you sleep whenever you feel like it.

Here's the instructions for updating JW Player and ffmpeg:

To update JW Player to the newest version, go to http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5977

and read the instructions. Read the whole thread as you'll see there is the long way and the short way. I use the method I suggested as it seemed to be less time consuming. IF I want to know what version of the player I'm running, I'll just fo a right click on the installed player and it will tell me what version it is.

I just downloaded JW 5.6, extract player.swf, rename it to the current name in the subsonic/jetty/xxxx/webapp/flash folder and replace the original file. Rename JW Player 5.4 to Old JW Player 5.4. then drop player.swf into the directory and rename it to JW Player 5.4 when you're done it'll be named 5.4 but if you right click on it in SS you'll se that it's really 5.6

ffmpeg - go to http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ and download the latest static build for your system. This site is for Windows builds. Check http://www.ffmpeg.org/download.html for other OS's. I just extracted the ffmpeg.exe and replaced thet file in C:\Subsonic\transcode

I found that the newer ffmpeg enabled multi-core transcoding, which really helps a lot. The version that comes with SS only uses one core per video stream. I've mentioned this to Sindre, so hopefully he'll incorporate a newer build in his next beta.

Thank you
I will do that and try
I assume you install everything on pc where the server is and not in the tablet where i want to stream?
I am half retired too (63)
Let u know if i find improvement
Good night

story of my life
i thought it was better but the same problem again
after thirty minutes of continuous playing the picture gets static and loose fluidity..
Dont understand..
The only way is to stop the movie and start again from the time it was stopped..looks like a cache problem but I have increased the memory limit and my tablet have plenty of memory avalaible..
Could it be a Windows 64 bits problem (i have windows 7 64 bits)
i will try ffmpeg .exe in 32 bits instead..
Thank you anyways!

I am using normal standard subsonic transcoding settings to stream avi and mkv..
one point i just tried to stream mkv through the internet on my laptop in my office and it worked fine..
this could show i got a problem with the subsonic app i am using on my acer A500 tablet as this tablet is Android Honeycomb 3.1..
Do you know if the subsonic app downloadable from the android market is android 3.1 ready or maybe not...
Thanks
