subsonic with synology nas

ok I know that this is not exactly the right place to ask for help with my problem but I am quickly running out of options and I am getting no love from synology tech support or thier forums.

in a nutshell I am trying to get subsonic to work with a synology ds211j nas. I tried to use UNC to access the music folder but subsonic just doesn't see it. I can use a folder on another computer ie: \\HTPC\music which works just fine. but when I use \\DISKSTATION\music it just doesn't work. hopefully someone will be able to help. I have until july 3rd before the trial expires and I so want to donate and keep using subsonic. this has been an absolutely horrible experience for me. PLEASE HELP!

The subsonic service has to be given access permissions to the share.

Look for "Permissions to remote folders"

thanks for the reply and yes I had already done what you suggested. don't know what I did but I did finally get it working somewhat but I constantly get " a network error occurred retrying 1 of 4" this happens more consistently when I have a lot of subfolders as opposed to just two or three. I checked the log and found this:
"WARNING: Cache: musicFolderCache has a maxElementsInMemory of 0. It is strongly recommended to have a maximumSize of at least 1. Performance is halved by not using a MemoryStore."

so now I am trying find where I set the size of the music folder cache. I don't see it anywhere in the web browser and on my android phone it has a cache which I set to 10 GB but I don't think that is what it refers to. also what is this memorystore it mentions?

I'm not familiar with your particular setup, but I know that with large collections increasing the memory that SS can use sometimes solves problems with SS just quitting. You mention that it happens most often when it tries to access a lot of subfolders. I've always advocated keeping the file structure as sipmle as possible. SS does run faster with a simple structure and keeping path names shorter would probably help. I use X:\Music\Artist\Album\Tracks currently, but the next time I get into reorganizing the storage on my server, I'm going to dedicate a drive just for music and use MUSIC as the volume label. Then I'll be using \Artist\Album\tracks and just use X:\ as the Music Folder in the Subsonic settings.

Where is Subsonic actually installed on your set up? I can see you're trying to access the synology nas, but I don't know what type of platform you have SS installed on.

In Windows you just right click on the green tray icon to open the SS Control Panel and you can increase the allocated memory on the settings tab. The *nix version use a different method that I've seen posted here and there. *-nix installations require editing some settings in one of the files.

I'm having similar trouble with Subsonic seeing my shared music folder on my Synology DS411j. I have given Subsonic admin level permissions, stopped and restarted the service, and rebooted my machine, as per the tutorial previously mentioned. I have tried the UNC that my windows network recognizes "\\DISKSTATION\Music" and \\192.168.1.100\Music". Still unsuccessful. Love Subsonic! Any advise is welcome.

Thank you for taking the time to help. I've successfully run SS on a Win 7 starter Netbook for over a year with very little issue. A couple of weeks ago I bought a NAS and would like to move my music library to it. I can't seem to get SS to see the music folder over my network.

Problem Description: SS "no music folders found " on Synology DS411j NAS
Troubleshooting Steps: gave SS admin level rights in Windows Services, entered UNC of NAS Music folder in SS under "Music Folders"
Playback Application and version: HTTPS and Android SS
Subsonic Version: 4.4 (build 2172) – February 6, 2011
Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_26, Windows 7 (26.2 MB / 61.2 MB)
Hardware Platform: SS on Netbook running Win 7 Starter, Music storage on Synology DS411j NAS
Java Memory Limit: 512 MB
Problem Filename: \\Diskstation\Music

How did you do this? Did you change the username that Subsonic is running under to be "Administrator?"

Is that the account that you log into the machine with interactively?

If so, try this:

Open a command prompt and type "Net Use * /d"

This will remove all mappings to the NAS (and everything else) that are active.

Now, in the run box, type in the UNC of the music share.

Does it prompt you for a name and password?

If so, that is the problem... you probably need to create a username and password combination on the NAS itself that matches your windows logon information.

Thank you very much. I gave admin level rights using my Windows username and password to Subsonic. This is a different username and password than the one I use to access my NAS. The situation that you propose sounds like a likely suspect. I will try your suggestion, thanks again for the input.

Changed my login to my Windows netbook to match my login on the NAS. Updated Subsonic in services with the new username and password. BAM!!! Worked like a charm!!!! My music is visible on my NAS! Thank you Glenn and BKKK!
