Best video format for subsonic?

Hi All

First post, I have this installed on my NAS working five.
My movies are H264 and M4V for using on my Apple TV
The only file i'v managed to play is an .avi file.

What's the best format to convert to the stream on Subsonic?

Format all video files for playback locally or on a high speed connection to mp4 then uncheck the transcoding for mp4 in the Subsonic Settings\Transcoding.

Format all mobile video to flv.

Set up this way the videos will play directly to the player without any need for transcoding, which will improve performance.
