what is happend with the programmer of Subsonic :-(

Postby kwekkerz » Fri Jul 29, 2011 8:46 pm

You have a really good application build, and untill v4.3 i believed in this project. Stronger...if the application Subsonic should have a decent management about security for bandwith and user control i will donate a lot more. But the lack of functions who not worked, like max.bitrate for players in listen and download mode doesn't work...ssl doesn't work properly for official certificates... in 4.5 the "newest albums"disappeard...
is too much for me. I have more than 100.000 songs organized and hope you will see the light again. But why should i write this message...? I'll think you will not listen to just one of your members. A quiet member from the start....

I can tell you "what happend (sic) with the programmer of Subsonic"...

He just released v4.5b2 of what is unquestionably my all-time favourite piece of opensource software, after patiently listening (yes, listening!) to hundreds of us users with our questions, suggestions, wishlists, and fix requests.

For the record, "Newest Albums" IS still there in v4.5 -- I'm running it, and it is called "Recently Added", under the Home screen.

Constructive criticism is welcomed by the best of developers and user groups, but your post (and especially the inexplicable subjectline) comes off as whinging and ingratitude. Please feel free to resume being quiet again.

As the saying goes, the best way to silence a lone ******'s booing is for the thousands of supporters to drown it out in cheers. Thanks Sindre for v4.5b2 yesterday, coming barely a month after the previous release -- cannot wait to install and test it out! :-)

A grateful longtime user since 2005 and donator,
Supra92

.... "******" thats sweet coming from an arrogant "septic tank" !!!

FWIW ... the OP is from the Netherlands, his first language is not 'American English' so his post has lost something in translation.

The OP has valid points that should be addressed, good & secure user management, bandwidth control etc ... all valid points.

Ever thought that may be the OP doesn't want to dick about with the latest beta??

Dude take yir ten gallon hat aff and let yir heid breathe !!

An apology to the OP would be a good start.

Peace

CR.

Easy boys. We all tend to get a bit testy at times, but i would hope that this forum doesn't devolve into a mere venue for flame throwing like some of the other forums I visit (a particular cell phone forum comes to mind.)

I'm no saint, and I have certainly been guilty of losing patience with a user or two in some of my posts, but overall, this has been the most constructive forum I've participated in.

That said, everyone should understand that this dev does far more than any I've encountered when it comes to listening to users and incorporating the feedback he gets into SS. Understand that SS is the work product of ONE dev, one who also has other interests and is gainfully employed. Subsonic is not his sole activity and he also has a life apart from SS.

We all have our favorite bugs we gripe about and a list of features that we think should be added, and many of us think that our $15 donation somehow entitles us to demand that Sindre listen to us and jump to our particular issue.

If you want to help him, solve some of these problems: http://subsonic.svn.sourceforge.net/vie ... n/TODO.TXT

Bottom line - I really hopwe we all take a moment to pause and reflect on the value of perspective and civility and how much of an asset that has been in this forum. If you're really upset and dissatisfied, give some thought to what recenly happened in Oslo last week. Sindre lives in Oslo and assured me that he and his family were not directly impacted by those tragic events, but I'm sure it was too close to home to not be disheartening.

Support, good cheer, and mutual respect do tend to make the whole world a bit brighter. Let's all try to elevate our discourse to our mutual benefit.

Thanks guys

(I know "guys" may be ab bit politically incorrect, but I do think this forum is primarily testosterone based  )

This is to carbonrough...

You can't blame the longtime users/supporters of Subsonic to not get a little heated when someone comes along, who hasn't put in an ounce of help into the community or development of this freaking awesome application that is created in the spare time of one person. So I say, let these supporters have at it.

Haha. Peace, and thanks again Sindre for such an awesome program and for your precious time that you devote to it and us!

This thread is actually one of the more amusing comedy of errors that I've seen of late! I will take the responsibility on this one, mostly due to the fact that I flung around a singularly British pejorative as someone who was born and raised in the U.S. and thus cannot have a full-spectrum appreciation of the severity/vulgarity of that term elsewhere. It was a poor choice, and what was meant was a simple "twerp" or "rude person" -- upon reflection it clearly has far more insulting connotations than that. So, I apologise.

Re-reading, it was not one of my more-shining moments. I was fully aware the OP was from Netherlands, as I took the time to look at his profile and previous posts before writing the reply. And yet somehow still managed to make a small jab at his English spelling -- considering his country of origin, there was zero point to that either. Maybe that's as good a reason as any for me to avoid posts after midnight -- do I get to claim poor-decisionmaking-via-sleep-deprivation? :-)

What slays me is carbonrough's assumptions re: the septic tank and ten-gallon hat references -- me being in TX. The actual truth is I was born/raised/lived for 22 years in upstate New York (Rochester) -- even after 8 years in TX this place still feels utterly foreign, a whole other country. I frequently make my own goodnatured (usually) potshots at Texan life/attitudes -- having someone direct those at ME caused major synapse misfires in my brain :) I'm honestly no more Texan than carbonrough himself likely is (no hometown/origin listed for him, so we're left to speculate).

With all that said, apart from poor word choice I didn't think my reply was all that overly negative or mean -- if it came off as harsh it's because I tend to react a bit more when somebody takes a shot at Sindre personally, which is how that post and title were viewed. Generally if someone just gripes about SS itself I try to just provide help or else ignore it. In the OP's post I saw some rather regrettable shots at, and assumptions about, Sindre that are flat-out incorrect, and did not take kindly to that, especially with last weekend's tragedy still at the forefront of our minds. Unfortunately, I stumbled a bit in doing that so again, for that I apologise. No hard feelings on this end, and hope there are none elsewhere.

As Gary stated, this has long been one of the most constructive and civil forums in which I've have participated as well, and with the most active/helpful developer. Now it's time to get 4.5b2 on server and check out the song-sharing features :)

Peace, and cheers,
Supra92
