Album art issues...

Postby wezman2k » Mon Jul 25, 2011 10:37 am

is anyone here able to clarify why audiogalaxy/itunes recognize ALL of my album art but subsonic doesn't? i've heard numerous reports of subsonic not reading embedded artwork but there are certainly albums in there with no jpeg or imagine file in the root folder but it's still recognizing artwork randomly.

is there anything i can do about this rather than manually adding a jpeg to each album? there's so many...

It would be interesting to know how most folks here handle cover art, but from my experience the "jpeg-in-the-folder" method is usually the best route to go, especially since that's what SS's native interface uses (ie, when one goes to Change the cover art after bringing up an album.)

It is true that it's a time-consuming thing, especially if starting from scratch on a library of thousands of albums. The good part is that it's truly a "one-and-done" proposition - make your way through all the albums, and then you only have to do it for any ones you add later on.

Embedding cover art within the FLAC or mp3 files has always seemed interesting and a good idea, but ultimately SS's native folder.jpg route swayed me, as did the fact that it's just one file (as opposed to having to deal with 15 separate FLAC files re: the embedded method if one ever wanted to change the artwork for an album that already had it).

Perhaps someone else here with more experience in the embedding-art-in-mp3s method can provide better insight.

While we're on the topic of Cover art issues ... I just added a new subdirectory with another library to my install. SS can access and play all the music as it does in my other directories, the index has run and the stats have updated. The only issue I have is that I can't update any of the missing cover art in just the new directory. It always returns:

Failed to download image.

java.io.FileNotFoundException: \\MG08R2A\Multimedia\Music CD3\Ten Years After\Cricklewood Green\cover.jpg (Access is denied)

I'll look a bit closer at the details of the permission for that directory, but it seems odd that this is the first time I've run into this.

GJ This will probably not help but I did have a similar problem which caused some head scratching and it turned out that I had Mediamonkey open with that folder in the playlist which locked all the files for writing.

I don't wish to hijack this thread but another related cover art question.
Is there any way to get SS to download cover art as folder.jpg rather then cover.jpg for us windoze users?
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, Image but some abuse the privilege!

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Cricklewood Green is a great album :)

While I've only ever run SS on Linux, I do Windows/.NET/SQLServer for my job. The one thing that comes to mind, regarding 'access denied' errors in Windows... is that there are two places to set permissions:

-- the Security tab for the folder when rightclicking -> Properties. This should be addressing the actual folder permission itself at the filesystem level.

-- the Sharing tab --> Permissions button. This should be addressing the permissions for the network share specifically.

I've had many situations where I've gone in to the Security tab, confirmed a user has full access, and they still can't copy a file to my server. Then I remember I have to repeat that process for the Sharing->Permissions area. Once both of those are done, then things start working correctly again.

You probably know all of that having run SS on Windows for a long time, but that's the only thing I can think of offhand for Windows share access issues... worth doublechecking.

Usually for custom things like this, I head to the /jsp directory and have a look at the various files in there. However, I couldn't find any references to folder.jpg which seemed odd.

I backed out to the top-level $SUBSONIC_HOME directory, and did a "grep -lir" for 'folder.jpg'. The only file with this is this one:

$SUBSONIC_HOME/WEB-INF/classes/net/sourceforge/subsonic/service/SettingsService.class

Java .class files are compiled from java source code, so I'm guessing that is likely a binary file whose source would need to be modified to change that from folder.jpg to cover.jpg.

Yes sir!!! that fixed it. The new directory must not have been set to inherit the parent permissions of the share.
