Let me clarify: The myname.subsonic.org service is not based on DNS but uses HTTP redirect to forward the REST requests to the user's server.

For instance, if you type http://sindre.subsonic.org in your browser you will be redirected to http://79.161.78.5.

Yes, really!

But thanks for the shot anyway, it really helps raise the quality of the discourse here.

Hey guys I build large global networks for a living. My CCIE number is 1344 and I've been doing route/switch professionally since 1993. Reading through this thread it is clear that there is a misunderstanding of (fairly basic) networking concepts in this thread. Rather than undressing people publicly let me just offer up help via PM. Frankly, I'd rather spend my Sunday playing with my kids as opposed to breaking each technical issue down in this thread & replying to forums to some who is already an expert on these matters. Basically, Secure Socket Layer and HTTP are two different protocols and you can't have them both answer on one port via one listening application. There are ways to do this with different gear and software but most of the time with newegg/tigerdirect level networks you can't. Give me a few hours to get the kids fed and put to bed and I will get this working and feel free to PM with requests for help.
Thanks.

I have yet to have anyone explain to me how the port used by Subsonic in your home affects the port being used by your browser at work.

GJ51:
PM for an explanation on typical scenarios as to how these differences would work.

Continuing this thread, plenty of similar topics around in this forum. My headless linux server is reachable outside, but the server has an internal IP, which is selected automatically by the SS forwarding function - hence, no connection possible. Canyouseeme.org reaches port 4040 nicely via the external IP, no problems there. Is there a way to show that external IP to SS somehow?
