Gbps Server Google Beta Buffer Problem

Postby jerryyyyy » Mon Aug 01, 2011 2:02 am

Guys,

I know the moderators here are the best, so I have a question that is driving me and a few more folks nuts.

I am at a Beta site for Google Fiber that supposedly will bring a Gbps fiber line to your house. You will all be happy to know that I am running Subsonic on my Windows Home Server 2011 and it is serving at these amazing speeds.

But, the speeds for my laptop run 600Mbps up and 150Mbps down. This may sound great to you, but the system can do better. Same hardware as the server.

This is the diagnostic site: http://netspeed1.stanford.edu:7123/

Anyway, the diagnostics basically say that the in buffer is too small (64kbytes). Diagnostics on the server show a much bigger buffer. If you test you own systems, look at the details.

I have learned that this could be changed to a larger number in XP, but not in Windows 7.

Is this true? Is there any way to increase the buffer size? Apparently this is all "automated" in Windows 7.

Cheers

Howdy jerryyyyy!

Go here:
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks/
and run Tweak Tester. Then use DRTCP to tweak your connection (read up on details/steps to follow).
See if this helps at all, and if not, take your TweakTest results and post them in the Tweaks forum for more assistance: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/tweaks
Good luck! (you lucky bast...). :D

Thanks, we are actually the Alpha site, Kansas City will be the Beta site. They learned a lot on my install....

I believe was out at dsl reports and downloaded the software (TCP Optimizer?). When I ran the diagnostics it said this buffer was small. There is an acronym for it (?RWIN). This is how I got on this wild goose chase. I will go back as you suggest and post the results there.

I have learned from MS that this is supposedly done automatically for me now since Vista (kiss of death):

This is the original post on the problem:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... 611dc5d18a

This is the reference with information on parameters.

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/87969-h ... -in-vista/

Note the autotuning parameter... I have tried all except experimental and siable- maybe I need to go there. But this may all be hopeless? Have people gotten Gbps speeds on Windows 7?

Well, it turns out not only did I download the software but I posted the results over there 5 days ago, but no comments. I asked for a "sanity check" of these settings.

Any help appreciated.

I can run again, but this is what I got a couple of days ago. I am home tomorrow.

Thanks. I have worked a lot on this. I do not believe that the optimizers work on W7 or Vista, even run as Administrator most items blocked out and cannot change RWIN.

However, I have been able to install a new driver on the Intel NIC. This allows me to change the Receive Buffer size up to 2048, but I am not sure this registers permanently.

This is what i am getting with the analyser now:

« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
Tested on: 08.04.2011 18:56
IP address: 171.65.xx.xx
Client OS: Windows 7

TCP options string: 020405b40103030801010402
MSS: 1460
MTU: 1500
TCP Window: 65536 (NOT multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 8 bits (2^8=256)
Unscaled RWIN : 256
Recommended RWINs: 64240, 128480, 256960, 513920, 1027840
BDP limit (200ms): 2621kbps (328KBytes/s)
BDP limit (500ms): 1049kbps (131KBytes/s)
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 117
Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON
IP ToS: 00000000 (0)

Any suggestions appreciated, but I think I am a bit stuck here with this particular card (Intel82577LM) and W7.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I looked at this a bit more in detail and the WHS 2011 that is on the same fiber modem and Cisco router now gets consistently 800-900Mbps up and down. I could tweak that systems receive buffer.

The laptop generally runs 600 up and 150 down.

Two points that are undecypherable for me and hard to find on Google are:

Slowest link is a 622Mbps OC-12 subnet... this is OC-48 on the server.

Your PC has a 65k buffer that limits throughput... then at times the speed goes up and it says this buffer is 2000k.

Like to know what that subnet is, and it looks like Windows 7 negotiates the buffer size somehow.

Anyway, any insights would be appreciated.

More Data

Postby jerryyyyy » Fri Aug 05, 2011 6:34 pm

I have done some more experimenting and seem to be getting some interest at dslReports. My situation is, to review : I have a Windows Home Server 2011 running off the Same Cisco TES 301 Router with CAT 6 cabling as my laptop. The Server gets 800Mbps up and down, but the laptop gets 800Mbps up and generally only 150Mbps down. I understand this is very fast, but I want to understand how it works and how to tweek it.

The speedtest I use is:

»netspeed1.stanford.edu:7123/

Output from this test says that "Your PC has a 64 KByte buffer that limits throughput to 534 Mbps" and also says that the "link is 'OC-12'"

TCP Analyser Output is:

« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
Tested on: 08.05.2011 11:07
IP address: 171.65.xx.xx
Client OS: Windows 7

TCP options string: 020405b40103030801010402
MSS: 1460
MTU: 1500
TCP Window: 65536 (NOT multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 8 bits (2^8=256)
Unscaled RWIN : 256
Recommended RWINs: 64240, 128480, 256960, 513920, 1027840
BDP limit (200ms): 2621kbps (328KBytes/s)
BDP limit (500ms): 1049kbps (131KBytes/s)
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 117
Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON
IP ToS: 00000000 (0)

What I get from that is the Receive Buffer is not just right.

I seem to be able to manipulate that a little from my Intel 82577LM Gigabit NIC Controls, but the Receive buffer parameters range from 252 to 2048. Have tried several and they do not seem to affect the 65kBype buffer noted above.

This is like a Chinese puzzle..... and what is really funny is that at times the laptop does seem to show the 600Mbps+ speed down, but it seems to reset. I guess this may all come back to Windows 7 screwing around with the settings in some unfathomable way....

While most of us suffer with 1Mb up and 5Mb down ... I thought this post a good candidate for this site : https://whitepeopleproblems.wordpress.com/

(just teasing, i'm jealous!)

You are probably right... this goes right in there with choosing iPhone apps.... :) We have a bit too much time on our hands.

For the record, we have given up on this and thrown in the town in surrender to Windows 7 and autotuning. The final setting selected was "highlyrestricted" if anyone wants more references to this problem, here are some useful links... all this applies to Verizon Fios fiber and other fast systems when they arrive:
