Cant login - wrong user name or Password.

Postby hogman4prez » Mon Aug 01, 2011 6:58 pm

I have updated to the latest 4.5 beta and this has not fixed my problem.

Both my phone and web login from another pc i've tested cannot log into SS. It says wrong user name and password even though i have tested all user accounts and even created new ones. No matter what i try it says wrong user and pw.

I have tried rebooting my pc and stopping and restarting SS from control panel. I can log in via web browser host pc without any problems. but any other source gives me the user & pw error.

Any suggestions? Thanks for the help

Win 7 64 bit.
I have not made any changes since it was last working. it just stopped suddenly.

Subsonic Password Reset

The Subsonic music streaming server currently has not built-in way to recover or reset a lost password. If you locked yourself out, don’t give up just yet. The password reset method described in this article has been tested successfully with Subsonic 4.1 and 4.2.

Solution
Subsonic stores user passwords in encrypted form in the program database, probably using salted BCrypt hashes, although the exact implementation has not been investigated in the context of this article. It is not technically feasible to decrypt these hashes and retrieve the original password strings.

However, current versions of Subsonic export the program settings to a text file each time the server is shut down, and they reimport this text file when it is started back up. This text file also includes the encrypted password hashes, and they can easily be replaced by substituting the corresponding line as follows:

Open the Subsonic control panel and stop the service
Open a Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\subsonic\db
(on Linux this may be under /var/subsonic/db or /usr/bin/subsonic/db)
Open the file subsonic.script in a text editor

http://blog.gerke-preussner.de/2010/12/ ... -streamer/
Near the top of the file, find the following line: INSERT INTO USER VALUES('admin','enc:xxxxxxxxxx',0,0,0,FALSE)
Note that the xxxxxxxxxx value is a hexadecimal string that represents the encrypted hash of the user’s current password.

Replace the line above with the following: INSERT INTO USER VALUES('admin','enc:61646d696e',0,0,0,FALSE)
Note that the value 61646d696e is the hash for the password "admin"

Save the file
Restart the service in the Subsonic control panel.
It is now possible to log on with user name and password admin, which are also the default administrator credentials. Don’t forget to change the password to something else on the Settings screen right after logging on. Obviously, this technique works with any other user account as well.

Thanks for the detailed explanation but i am not having an issue with logging on with my admin account. On my host PC, i can log in, add new users and even change pw's of existing users. The problem is whatever user id i attempt to log in with outside of the host pc whether by the phone app or web browser on my laptop, i get the wrong user name and pw msg.

It was also doing this prior to upgrading to latest beta which i just tried this morning hoping it would fix it. no luck.

Any other ideas?

Check Settings/Advanced to see if LDAP authentication is enabled. If so, disable and save, then test.

Just to recap:

You can log in to the PC that hosts your Subsonic site and open the local browser and log into Subsonic.

Any attempt to log in from any other device both inside and outside your network returns invalid username or password.

You are able to access the log on screen to the site, but not able to log in.

Is that correct?

I went to a friends last night to test outside of home network. I was able to log into SS using pc browser using my primary ID. I have 5 users total set up. I am the only admin. Only 1 of my other users ID's were able to log in, the others said wrong id & pw. I changed the pw's for the ID's that werent working and out of no where I was able to log in again with my phone and other ID's.

However, this did not last for long. when i returned home and hour later I tested again on my phone and was again getting the ID and PW error for the account that I just had access to. I tried the other users again and they werent working anymore either.

Today none of the logins via phone app are working. i can log in using the ID's on my host pc browser.

This is very confusing. SS has been working flawlessly until this past weekend.

Thanks for your help with this.

You do know that both the username and password are case sensitive, right?

Seeing that we never determined the underlying cause of the OP's problem, it's hard to guess what is going on. I asked the questions the way I did because it's hard to imagine that all of them are true. If you can open the browser on the host PC and log in, the same credentials should work if you can access the logon screen from any PC. If you can log on locally, but not reach the logon screen from any other PC then it's probably a firewall issue on the host. If you can log on from anywhere inside the network, but not from outside, then it's probably a router issue not allowing the request to get to the server.

So, I ask again:

-You can log on to the local host ok?
-From any other PC ON YOUR NETWORK you can get to the log on screen, but it won't accept the same credentials you used to log on to the local host?
- Finally, do you only have one instance of Subsonic installed on your network?

I appreciate you following up with this. It is working properly now with all user login's. I didnt do anything different to reset it that i hadnt tried 10 times before. But whatever was causing the problem cleared itself up.

Thanks again,
Brian
