Re: Subsonic 4.5 released

There is some confusion.

My issue is that I am "admin" and I CANNOT see the Share buttons.
Another user who HAS NOT got sharing CANNOT see the Share buttons.
Another user who HAS got sharing CAN see the Share buttons.

The admin user does not have permission to share?

Thanks

I admit, I was nervous to upgrade (I always am) but it went smoothly as can be. I had not tried any of the betas so this is my first experience with the share feature and I have to say, it's pretty cool!

Just an FYI.

On OSX 10.6.8, after install I had video streaming issues - the same I have had before that were fixed by re-compiling FFMPEG as listed here:

viewtopic.php?t=5753%29

After the ugprade, the ffmpeg binary at /Library/Application Support/Subsonic/transcode was replaced, so I went back to my original problems of access denied, videos fail if changing bit rates etc.

Since I had already compiled ffmpeg on my system this was easily solved by running the following in the terminal.

Code: Select all
su
cd /Library/Application\ Support/Subsonic/transcode/
mv ffmpeg ffmpeg.old2
ln -s /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg

I renamed ffmpeg to ffmpeg.old2 because there was still the original ffmpeg.old from when I first compiled it. You can choose to keep that or not. After restarting subsonic - voila! Back to perfect video performance on all formats, and on my Android again as well.

Hope this helps someone else, and maybe we can get this proper ffmpeg build added to the next OS X build as the list of post-install changes on OSX is starting to grow (SSL ports, Java memory allocations, ffmpeg library locations, etc) If you need any assistance Sindre I can possibly be of some aid.

Thanks again for an awesome piece of software!

Hi,

In the next release I'm planning to include the ffmpeg binaries on http://ffmpegmac.net

It would be great if you could try them out on your system.

Cheers,

Works so far...I backed up all folders before install, then installed on top of 4.4 on my windows 7 x64 machine. Everything is up and running, kept all settings and Share options are available in Admin and in Users rights menu.

I tested the share to just a link and facebook and it works great. Only thing like previous users request is that the dynamic DNS be fixed to resolve at the domain name, and not the external IP address. I know I could setup another domain through someone like DynDNS, but last I heard the share media will no longer work if I do this.

Either way I can deal with it, or not share, no big deal! I still love the software!

Hi,
I just downloaded the version (for Lion) from that link and it works a treat :)

Fan-frickin'-tastic. I updated last night, and am loving it.

However, I'll add my voice to the chorus requesting that the share links resolve to the domain name rather than the IP address. Something skeeves me out a little about putting my IP address on Facebook, for instance. Obviously, with the domain, my network is basically just as exposed, but at least it's not a big flashing light that says "here's where my machine lives!" I tried running the share link through bit.ly to mask it, but it displays basically the same way - only now it reveals the port as well. Yikes.

Thanks again for all your hard work, Sindre. Now off to make some more unpaid endorsements on FB and Twitter: "Are you still not using Subsonic? WTF is wrong with you people?!"

I noticed something interesting about the sharing feature. When I properly turned on the xxx.subsonic.org setting in Network then shared an album or song I got a link like this http://cipher27.subsonic.org/share/zwgce which is correct. However I am using DynDNS and have very strict firewall rules in place so that this never resolves. Which is correct, it should not resolve for me. However if I append the /share/zwgce to my true server address https://www.cipher27.com/subsonic/share/zwgce it works just fine. Can someone else test this work around on their system and see if it works for them? If so then shouldn't it be possible to add a setting specifying the non-Subsonic.org address for the server thereby allowing those of us using our own domains to share files? Also advantageous is the fact that the public IP is not shown in the share, as I have seen a lot of people express concern over that.

For the record I am using:
Windows Server 2K8 R2 SP1
IIS
Apache Tomcat/Jakarta
SSL
DynDNS
Personal registered domain
Subsonic registered

Thank you Sindre for all the hard work you continue to provide for this project. There is a beer waiting for you in San Francisco anytime!

Nice! So all we need is a way to set the specific server address in addition to the Subsonic.org option and those of us using custom domains and or DynDNS can share via our own domains! Sindre, can this be implemented?

Thank you,

Sindre - the ffmpegmac.net site was not up when you first posted. I just downloaded the binaries and replaced the ones I compiled in the /library/Application Support/Subsonic/transcoders folder. Works exactly like the one compiled on my own system. With default transcoding settings I get video files playing fine on my browser and on my android. Also can play lower bitrates and higher bitrates than the original file.

Still have an issue with scrolling/dragging the slider to navigate within the video file. This doesn't seem to be because of transcoding though and may be more because of the JWPlayer and its control of the streaming backend. Good call to include that in the next release!!!

Thanks for all your awesome work Sindre!

Re: Subsonic 4.5 released (FreeBSD 8.2 Issue Standalone)

Postby michaelsonline » Sat Aug 27, 2011 1:04 am

I run the standalone version on FreeBSD 8.2-STABLE
previous versions -> 4.4 runs fine
I tried version 4.5.
after starting the subsonic process, it uses quite a bit more cpu than 4.4,
After about 15-30 minutes subsonic is no longer reachable from a browser.
Process is still running.
Not sure what is causing the issue.

I removed 4.5
I switched back to 4.4 for the meantime.

I can confirm paradym3's findings:

My registered subsonic link, http://frogmoses.subsonic.org/share/bwrAu, resolves to an ip address. My own domain name hosted at dyndns.org works fine:
http://frogmoses.dyndns.org/share/bwrAu.

Since I use a dynamic ip, it will eventually change, rendering the link invalid.

Awesome product - hope a fix for this can be found.

Not to pick nits, but if your IP address ever changes you can simply restart the subsonic service and it will re-register the redirect associated with your server to the new IP address. Then the shared links will work again.

I even think Subsonic checks occasionally to see if the external IP address has changed. But I may be mistaken on that one... I'll have to check the code to see if that really happens.

The problem that paradym3 has is due to his "very strict firewall rules" (his words) not due to the use of the subsonic.org address. I'm betting that http://cipher27.subsonic.org does not resolve correctly due to the same rules. (It doesn't, I just tried).

NB: I am also in favor of being able to set the base URL of the sharing link. I just want to make sure we are talking about the right reasons here...
