Web UI problem: not loading entirely or not at all

Postby Phazon » Mon Aug 15, 2011 11:26 pm

EDIT: Here's a video where I reproduce the problem
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUL7g8f6bOQ&hd=1 (1080p video, put it in fullscreen :P)

Hi, first of all, sorry for my English, it's not my primary language.
I love Subsonic. I've been using this piece of software for 2 years now (singe Simplify Media for iPhone is dead), and I couldn't go back and use something else.

Sadly, recently Subsonic started to be sluggish and unstable. I didn't change anything on the computer, didn't modify any router settings, etc.

The Web UI will sometimes load properly, but most of the time, it will only load partially. I must then wait for as long as 5 minutes and the Web UI will generally load entirely. The same thing happens locally and over the Internet.

Here's an example of what I mean when I say the UI doesn't load properly:

And that's not all. During this period (when I'm waiting for the UI to load properly), if I try to close my browser and reconnecte to the server, the subsonic-server.exe service will hangs.. I can't stop it anymore. If I "stop" it and restart it using the Subsonic tray icon, another subsonic-server.exe is created in the task manager, and both of them are "freezed" (server unreachable, web browser loading forever). iSub on iPhone seems to "trigger" this problem a lot too.

I tried the stand-alone version, the windows intaller version and the WAR version. Same problem everytime, or the subsonic-server.exe service hangs, or the Tomcat server hangs.

Tried many differents things (allowing more or less memory, changing the port, tried to access Subsonic with a Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc.), running it from a RAMdrive, using the stock firmware and DD-WRT on my router, etc. and the problem persists.

It's running on the following computer:
CPU: Xeon 3520 @4.2GHz
Memory: 12Gb DDR-3 @2000MHz
HDD: 4 x Intel X25-M RAID-0 (Subsonic running on a dedicated 1.5Gb Ramdrive)
Router: WRT610N
Connection: 16mbps down / 1.5mbps up

Finally, the problem affects Subsonic 4.4, 4.5 beta2 and 4.5 final. Started to notice it under Subsonic 4.4

Anything else I need to provide?

Forgot to say that if the Web UI achieves to load properly and entirely, the server will then be lightning fast and can stay days and days online and responding (but will usually crash as soon as I try to acces my mysic with iSub) When it happens, a computer reboot is necessary because the service (subsonic-server.exe) or the Tomcat server become completely unresponsive and impossible to terminate.

All music files are stored locally on the server, on a 1.5TB Caviar Green RAID-1 array

I watched the video a couple times and I'm assuming that I'm seeing Subsonic run on the system that hosts it, but the address bar gives an IP:port # instead of "local host:port#

Therefore, have you checked to see how SS runs when started from the Subsonic Control Panel? Right click on the tray icon and select open Subsonic in browser.

The reason I ask and want to verify that I'm seeing the local instance is because I noticed in the video that your network icon has a red X indicating a connection issue on your network.

I've seen the left column load slowly occasionally, but I've never seen the top header load slowly by itself. This type of problem is usually either a permissions or database problem.

I'd also suggest running a manual search index update to see what that does. Settings/Search - Update search index now.

If all else fails, delete C:\Subsonic, uninstall and reinstall. Also consider checking to verify Java is up to date and consider an uninstall/reinstall of Java.

Finally, read the Subsonic logs for clues and also check your system errors in event viewer to see if anything stands out.

Hi GJ51, thanks for your reply. After trying all suggestions, nothing worked so I decided to re-install Windows, everything is fine now (Subsonic 4.5 WAR and Tomcat 6)

Thanks ;)
