Media Folder - UNC: no hostname, just IP

Postby tom_22 » Wed Aug 31, 2011 8:28 pm

Hi all,

For ages I used "\\hostname\share\folder" to point to a music folder on my NAS.

Now, a few days ago I changed/upgraded my NAS. I copied over/kept the folder structure and even used the same hostname and IP (the old NAS obviously went offline).

Since then subsonic doesn't work anyone with the format "\\hostname\share\folder" but requires "\\IP\share\folder". However, DNS works fine - nslookup resolves into the correct IP.

Does anyone have an idea what could have gone wrong and how to get it working again with "hostname" instead of "IP"?

Any comments appreciated!

Thanks,
Tom

P.S. Thanks Sindre for this great piece of Software!!!

What are you running SS on?

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Here is a few things I would try if you haven't already done so.

1 Obviously check that the server can see the nas using UNC via windows explorer
2 Delete the jetty cache and restart SS
3 If your music collection is large create a new test folder in the nas with just say 1 or 2 albums (makes it quicker to troubleshoot)
4 Disable any other folders then add the new folder to SS using unc and update search index. Check SS log for clues if not working.
If that doesn't work come back (or buy another nas :) )

Hi there,
...:
1) The server can see the share/folder via UNC: OK
2) deleted Jetty cache: no difference
3) created new folder with 3 albums
4) disabled other folders and updated index on new folder:
Code: Select all
[9/1/11 9:27:20 PM CEST] INFO MusicFolderDao Created music folder \\hostname\Media\Music2
[9/1/11 9:27:25 PM CEST] INFO SearchService Starting to create search index.
[9/1/11 9:27:25 PM CEST] INFO SearchService Updating Lucene search index.
[9/1/11 9:27:26 PM CEST] INFO SearchService Created search index with 0 entries.

--> SS still can't see the content;

However, the idea with the cache might be the right track: when I removed all Media Folders the left frame wasn't updated when I removed the last Folder. So it still showed the contents, though it wasn't linked anymore. When I clicked on any of the songs I got an error: "Access denied to file ... "

Hm, any ideas ( another NAS is not really what I can afford :-( )
:-)

Thanks, Tom

I had similar issues with network folders when I tried to use Tomcat with the WAR version on my WHSv1 box. Essentially, Win2003. I just uninstalled Tomcat and ran the Windows installer, then gave the Subsonic service a logon that had rights to the UNC shares on my other server and everything worked again. I tried editing the logon rights for Tomcat to do the same thing, but it didn't work. Oddly, the shared folders on the WHS are accessible using the UNC names. So, Tomcat can access the shares on the local machine, but cannot access the shares on my other server.

Easiest solution for now is to just go back to the Windows installer and edit the service logon.

Thanks Gary & BKKKPewsey for your reply.

I found the problem. It was indeed just related to Tomcat - means the Tomcat-Service still ran with the wrong user/account details.
What failed was updating the user/account details from the task-bar Tomcat-icon. It turned out this is somehow not store.
After updating the Service user/account details for Tomcat via Control Panel>Service it worked straight away.

Still not sure why my old NAS didn't require a different service account for Tomcat, but I don't mind at this point.

Thanks again for your input!

Cheers,
Tom
