Why is playlist download incredibly slow, even on a LAN?

Postby speedwaystar » Sat Jan 01, 2011 2:49 pm

I have a 1000 or so song playlist, which weighs in at a mere 150K. For some reason (and Audiogalaxy has the same problem for reasons I simply cannot fathom) Subsonic takes forever to download the playlist to a web browser on the same LAN. Needless to say, trying to load the playlist on my Android over wifi is "connection error, retrying 4" territory.

The playlists are just text files. A 150K text file shouldn't take more than a second or two to download. Then the client has a list of songs and can simply ask the server for song #365 by name. If the server can't find it, simply say "not found"-- there shouldn't be any kind of laborious "check if every song exists before I'll actually let you try to play the list" going on the part of the server (which is what I suspect). There shouldn't be any reason for slowdowns or timeouts or anything of the kind.

Am I missing something or is this really something that should not happen?

agreed.. loading playlists and large folders take way too long

i've turned off cover arts (by deleting all the Cover art mask extensions) in hopes it'll become faster, but it's just as slow... just wth is subsonic doing?

The delay seems to be in the javascript loading it into the browser.

I have a 650 item playlist that is also very slow in Firefox. I've tried it in Google Chrome and it loads much faster. (Unfortunately there are many things about Chrome I don't like, but that's a different story).

i use firefox and iSub... both take ages to load large playlists and folders

i'll have to try chrome.. but i doubt the browser is causing the trouble

i have a feeling subsonic is reading every single file for ID3 information... there ought to be a better way to handle this task if that's the case... (like a proprietary playlist which saves relevant ID3 info with auto/manual update, because how often does one update/change ID3 information...)

Is this a saved playlist?

yes, a saved playlist

but the slowness is not limited to playlists... large folders also take quite some time to load (well... longer than it ought to... folder names shouldn't be hard to generate...)

I was about to start a thread about this..but then I remembered my manners. :)

it's crazy to watch the subsonic app on the droid Network erroring...then finally ..communicating with the server.......... for what seems like forever. I often get that the app isn't responding and I can FC, Wait, or report it. Waiting works, but is a hassle.

Like you say..even over a LAN when it finally finishes struggling with that 150k file it starts downloading songs at about 1.5mb a second. heh

must be doing something on the server side?

I also have noticed if you queue up 1 album it tends to stay "loaded"? in your playlist longer? like if I fire up one of those 150k playlists, it sometimes gets knocked out (when I open subsonic app again, I have to restart the playlist) but on a 25 song playlist it'll stay loaded for days. Maybe this is androids JIT processing? kills it and loses that because with the larger playlist it needs to be killed more often? I have no idea..just guessing.

would love to see the issue addressed though. :)

Same issue here. Recently donated because I love the idea of having access to all my music while in the car, but having to repeatedly retry connections in the hopes of getting a particular album or song list to show up is somewhat frustrating.

At first I thought it was just the 3G being finicky, but I have the exact same issue when connecting over local WLAN. Like Vlican I thought cover art may have been the issue and wiped them all out, but they apparently have nothing to do with it.

I guess there's been no movement on this? Every time I update subsonic I hope that this has been addressed, but it's still taking a really long time to open a playlist.

It also seems like if I close the player and re-open it a few hours later, the playlist that it took so long to open earlier in the day has been wiped out and now I have to download it again.

for $20 a year Amazon will let me store all my music there and stream very quickly. considering moving all my music there for times when I care more about quickly hearing music than hearing a specific playlist....

Dusting off this topic

Postby ggibby » Tue Sep 06, 2011 6:05 pm

*bump*

I've tried multiple variations, but a reasonable sized list to listen to at work (8hrs, +/-125 tracks)
takes so long I rush to my desk and open it first before making coffee, getting the mail, et cetera.

Tried with the playlist folder on the same path (\\nastorage\music) as the artist folders, then on a local (D:\playlists),
no joy.

MediaMonkey allows me to format the playlists almost any way necessary... if only I knew.

What is the setting of the download limit under Settings | Advanced?

The playlist is limited to the download limit just the same as downloading anything else on the server. If it has any value in it, that is what the rate is. If it is set to 0, then it is unlimited.

Both Download and Upload are set to 0
Non-SSL Stream Port is disabled - would enabling that help?
Maybe I just need shorter playlists.

I'm dreaming of a QNAP TS-412 with Subsonic installed to replace my Promise NS4300N...
seems like a dedicated/appliance solution is the fastest option.

So, no idea why this is happening? Or how to speed loading times?

971 artists
2,572 albums
35,694 songs
233.52 GB (~ 3,627 hours)

How slow is slow :?

Just as a test I loaded a playlist of 150 tracks (all mp3s) using chrome browser via my local lan.
That took 25 secs from clicking load playlist to actual playing.

If anyone has a got a problem further info is required eg what hardware SS is on, version, file types etc
and what client you are using eg browser, phone etc

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Bump.

I am a donating Subsonic user and love the program, but loading playlists and songs takes so long that I really cannot impress my friends with this program. Hopefully this will get fixed in the next version.
